How do you handle the "Forgot Password" problem?

Say, if a user clears out local storage and forgets their password. Is there a way to recover it from what's stored on the server?

This is what I've been working on lately in the blockchain space. Would love to get thoughts and opinions from the HN crowd.

Crypto will be a leading force in NYC's tech growth over the next 5-10 years.

The demo will blow your mind. My biggest takeaway was that AR probably has more potential in the long-term than VR. VR is immersive sure, but you quickly run into physical boundaries or your mind becomes out of sync with your body. AR has all the benefits of VR but layered on top of your physical environment, enriching it and providing a reference point.

To speculate, I'd say VR will find its killer app in gaming/entertainment (similar to TV), and AR will become the next great I/O interface between humans and computers (similar to phones/tablets).

'I'm Feeling Lucky' is actually my default search in a Chrome tab. It's super fast to just type 'espn ncaab scores' in a new tab and get exactly what you want without any clicks.

For Google results, I preface with a 'g '.

If Firefox had this feature (it may and I haven't found it) I'd probably switch over. Chrome takes up so much memory on my Mac with its Google Chrome Helpers, it's a pain.

I help run a distributed company with folks in NY, CA, VA, and NC. Content like this from Zapier or other successful remote-first companies provides an excellent source of ideas to apply to my own team and also helps to slowly remove the stigma against remote work. As a huge Alexa fan, the big differentiator for me is the Chromecast integration. The ability to walk into my apartment and say "Play the latest Colbert" while I do a couple chores is a holy grail for me.

Alexa accomplishes this scenario well for audio (music/news/audio books) but not video.

Being able to query/search/sort on encrypted data sounds really powerful and super relevant for this day and age.

I look forward to playing around with it.

Personally, I see the lottery as an opt-in tax on hope geared towards the poor.

Although I hate that an "internal valuation" of $1B is used as a major milestone, I think Appian is quite a solid company and really like the Atlassian comparison.

They have a WYSIWYG UI-based coding tool that is "code once" and available on web, iOS, and Android with no additional work. Some of those features are lightyears ahead of the JS communities.

While I don't agree with everything in the article, I did enjoy its hyperbole and think it touched upon some really good points that are sometimes difficult to convey. Especially within an organization where the standard groupthink is hyper-driven and hyper-competitive.

I've observed similar patterns since joining the workforce at a large consulting shop several years ago. It's one of the reasons I started freelancing and will always seek to BYOB (Be your own Boss).

Ruby gems are a good example, especially gems that provide hooks into an API.

Even if you're just adding another parameter to an existing endpoint (which is largely a copy/paste exercise), it's a great way to learn the structure of a gem, learn your way around API documentation, and check out others' best practices and unit tests. I contributed to the official Instagram gem during my first few weeks of learning Ruby.

I think the nail in the coffin was when portable devices were allowed during take-off and landing in the US.

I used to skim SkyMall when the flight attendants told me to put my phone away and would sometimes even continue reading when devices were allowed. But now that I don't have to put down my device at all, SkyMall gets none of my attention.

I mean, all software has bugs.

To me, the major difference between Apple's OS's and the Windows/Linux/Androids of the world is that Apple _fails smoother_.

A typical bug may result in an iOS app freezing and then quitting on the user. However frustrating this may be, Apple's "something went wrong" user experience is much better than the annoying pop-up alerts, blue-screens of death, and cryptic error messages of the other platforms.

These error messages are only relevant to a small, small subset of power-users, so why show them to everyone else? The other 99% of users are just going to quit and restart the application anyway (as we've been trained to do), so why not smoothly lead them down this path?

SOAP Web Services around still frequently used in a lot of large corporations, where technology evolves a little slower and Microsoft products are still very popular.

Being a Rails fan myself, I have always enjoyed using HTTP Web Services and interacting with tech companies' Restful APIs so easily.

This post provided a clear, side-by-side comparison of the technologies including the historical context of SOAP, which I found really useful and enlightening. If I could give you some Bitcoin for writing it, I would. Have a new Twitter follower instead.

It's hard to find succinct, objective technology articles in this day and age. Most reviews I find are either unconstructively biased ("dynamic typing sucks!") or too long and convoluted to be effective.

This is such a shame.

Aereo was an important part of my cord cutting strategy here in NYC.

I can still get a lot of content from Roku + Chromecast but can't get the nationally broadcast channels (antennas won't work for my apartment location). Seems so backwards to me.

I can't wait for an Aereo replacement if anyone knows of one.
