Mind explaining then? To me printing money is always bad.

Because the money is funny money that's not real or robust. The US dollar has lost 85-96% of it's value since the early 70's. Just my view atleast
I'm worried about a complete crash that would plummet everything. Imagine if every year the stock market represented real industry and work and value. It would be strong and sturdy. But with this money being so loose. It's similar to if I just gave you decks of cards year after year and said build, build, build. That house of cards is not going to be great and can collapse.
What happens in 80 years when milk is $34 a gallon?
You're the one who seems to get what I'm saying exactly. It's like a big snowball that the more you feed it the more it grows as it rolls.
I can't tell if this is good or bad or not. Because it seems like funny money to me.
I think it's better to correct for inflation. The money supply can grow and it doesn't necessarily cause inflation (see the 2008 monetary response to the Great Financial Crisis as an example).
I may be a layman but I'm pretty sure that was just one type of inflation.
I'm not sure this is true. In the 70s, inflation was high and stock returns are low. In the 90s, inflation was low and returns were high. In 2021, inflation was high and returns were high.
I'm not exactly talking about returns. I mean prices. In my eyes when you look at the S&P 500, every time there's money printing it's like a rolling snowball. It just gets bigger and bigger. But it's weird because that growth itself is not reflective of companies doing things but just them investing money or buying back stocks.
What does `$()`?
Can somebody explain the takeaway with Camus in this? I can't seem to understand it.
I find Ubuntus and for that matter most DE font system superior to OSX's. Apple touts accessibility but on OSX you can't even change the font size system wide. You literally have to go into each and every app and change it specifically. Let's hope that the app supports it. Many don't.
On Ubuntu you can just change the font size and it changes everywhere without having to decrease your resolution so you take advantage of what your hardware provides.
I don't understand. I run linux on an IBM Thinkpad T40 for the better part of a decade. Then I moved to a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon which also runs Ubuntu fine.
IN fact installing linux takes at most 20 min and I am done. Drivers and everything are all automatic.
Windows on the other hand can take hours to install from scratch. God forbid you need a service pack or to find a driver that's not easily found anymore.
People have a cognitive dissonance about what it takes to run Linux. It's by far much easier than people lead on. Yes if you need to get into the underneath of things then maybe it becomes more difficult. But I don't think that's been part of the story for average users for a long time.
Ubuntu even has an option to install these at install time
Been using linux for decades and have never had to do any of this. Even 15 years ago I didn't need to.
Weird argument. Because I have given Linux systems to the elderly before. People with little to no experience with computers. Guess what they were all fine.
My mother was a long time windows user. Kept getting viruses. She was converted to Ubuntu and has used it for over a decade now without issue.
Linux is far easier for people than you think. My mother is a senior citizen now and this is her second computer.
The UI concerns you bring up are just silly, They are about the same as you buying a new hammer and it having an inconsistent wood grain or a metal burr.
So there is no pay gap. Certain people, mostly women choose to not work as much and make less. They should make less.
If I as a person decide I only want to work 2 days a week and my coworkers are all doing 5x8hr days. Why should I doing less work be paid the same?
This seems easily solved. Women should stop having kids if earning the same is important to them.
My concern with these hackintosh systems is safety. Tools like Unibeast/Clover and whatever else. They manipulate the OSX install image. It all seems to work but then you type in your credentials for the bank or work into a browser and who knows if the OS is compromised.
Is it safe? That is the question.
not in America anymore.
It's well shown that diversity hurts civic life in communities. All at the same time being a great thing for businesses. http://archive.boston.com/news/globe/ideas/articles/2007/08/...
Sorry but forced integration is not going to make things better. There's a reason even diverse cities like NYC are still pretty segregated by neighborhood.
On the other hand if he was allowed to walk home your parents would likely be arrested for child abuse.
To me as somebody who was raised in NYC and still lives there. American suburbia is just lovely.
I find nyc dead boring and claustrophobic. Yes there nice restaurants in the city but how many times do you want to eat out? How many shows or do you go to? How many of this and that.
That's the conclusion for me. Sure there are restaurants I'd like to visit. I can commute to go eat once. I don't need to live there and once I have eaten at all the good places (which takes a few weeks at most) you're done.
I'd hate for the suburbs to be undone. NYC is really not a pleasant place to live. So many lunatics walking around and people have no concept of space.
It may be possible. How long was the flight? IT just seems unlikely since I have had doctors ask me have you flown in the last 24 hours.
There's a lot and that's why seeing a doctor is so very important. I am actually having an anxiety attack right now after reading your post. You didn't cause it :) but it certainly did stir up some stuff with my anxiety.
For an anxiety sufferer like ourselves. It can be very hard. I have numbness in my left hand, an odd pain in my back and shortness of breadth. This could be a lot of things. Things I'd rather everybody not mention because I know them well. But if I went to the ER every time these things popped up well at one time in my life I'd live there. The probability suggests that I am fine. The probability suggests that after thousands of trials similar to this of which I ended up fine, I will likely be fine here. There's a chance I will not be but it's a chance I need to take.
Wish you the best :)
If there's a possibility that this came from a flight then you may want to add that to the story. When was the last flight you took prior to the 2 weeks of the pain starting?
If you're interested this paper has a very detailed look at how flights affect us
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21981017
I read it when I had access years ago.
There's a lot of good info here as well as some misinformation. As a fellow anxiety sufferer this is all too familiar.
In medicine there an idea of Virchow's_triad [0]. Either there's something wrong with your blood, the blood vessel walls became injured or there is abnormal blood flow.
In young people and even 34 is fairly young. Blood clots aren't all that common. Even in long haul air travel the risk is so much higher in the elderly, obese and those who have had recent surgery.
What I am trying to bring up here is there are other factors that could be at play other than stasis. Could Gavan have bumped his leg into something and not even noticed? Could he have a genetic component that leads to increased clotting? Usually in these cases there is a lot of follow up. Usually the person is put on blood thinners if there's a legitimate cause. Or maybe he really is just so unhealthy that he got a bloodclot all while walking 3 miles a day. I know if I emailed my doctor right now and asked her about this. She would get back to me and tell me that this is a very rare rare case. Usually just getting up to go get a drink every now and then or to go to the bathroom is enough to recalibrate pressure in your lower legs. Many people don't walk 3 miles a day, especially in suburbia. Some do though. I guess I am saying is a lot of people sit a lot. A lot of people don't walk 3 miles per day and something specific to Gavan's physiology may be at play here.
What we can do though is take this as a warning call and thank Gavan for sharing with us. It certainly woke me up a bit more.
* Drink a lot of water.
* Don't eat a lot of sugar.
* Stand when you can. If you have a standing desk. Great.
* Get up and take breaks when you can. Set a reminder. I get up every hour.
* At lunch get out and go for a walk.
* Try to hit the 10k steps per day.
There's also a tool we can use to access the likelihood of DVT. It's the very same tool Primary care doctors will use and it's called the Well's criteria. Here's a interactive calculator http://www.mdcalc.com/wells-criteria-for-dvt/
You should read up on it if interested. There's also the "Primary Care Rule for DVT" http://www.aafp.org/afp/2011/1215/p1417.html
Though for this one you need to have a D-Dimer taken which is a blood test.
This is such a silly thing. Who really believes Cook. While Apple denied it, they gave access to their systems to the government. It was in Snowdens documents.
Why is being a hipster seen as wanting to "oppose trends"?
I would think all of thing things we associate with being a hipster. Those things are what attract these people and we later just called them hipsters to categorize.
Hipsters aren't non conformists. They are conformists. The whole culture is the act in conforming to be like other hipsters.
Can't be better than that. Awesome
I know there's an icon to tell posts apart but there needs to be more done to differentiate posts. I shouldn't have to be so careful
I wasn't nitpicking I thought I could learn something.
Lennart says the following though
But quite frankly, we added timesyncd because we believe that installing a full DNS server like ntpd/chrony on all client machines is absolute overkill
Frankly I hate that spotify is so built around playlists. I have never made a playlist in my entire life and don't plan to. It's a great tool for making a list of songs for a party or maybe a road trip. Maybe a parent wants to get a kids favorite songs for a car ride to school. Things like that are of great use.
But overall why do we need a playlist to add songs to a library. I have so many gigs of music on my desktop. When I pay for a music subscription I want to replicate that.
Trying to do that in spotify is a disaster. Not only does the interface both web and fat client become slow and cluttered but you don't get a hierarchical view.
I went back to just following artists on spotify. Then when I want to listen to an album I just go through the semi hierarchy. I tend to listen to full albums not songs.
The fact that you can't save an entire artist on spotify says everything.
I really like Google Play music but google doesn't give it the care spotify does. Google takes the stance that their algorithms can solve every problem and spotify knows humans need to be there to fix some issues. One common issue I saw on Google Play Music was albums belonging to artists of the same or very similar names being listed on each other pages. The worst part is google gives users no way to alert them.
I truly hope apple shakes things up.
