There are so many neat use cases like this one that I'm skeptical of the AI-is-a-dot-com-bubble naysayers. Not to mention that, unlike in 2000, technical-adjacent people can now get a reasonable approximation of their ideas running quickly.
I've never had a problem with any CDs, even my old Quake CD from about 30 years ago. Probably there's an issue with your drive or the disc wasn't stored well.
Indeed. Things are looking very bleak for software engineering as a specialization. It's been clear for years that Capital has been desperate to crack the software development nut, so to speak. Starting about 15 years ago, the intensity of Capital to destroy software engineering as a lucrative discipline really began in earnest: bootcamps, special certificate programs, the "learn to code" movement, and now AI. For at least 20 years I've heard Capital banging on the door to invade and drive wages down and now they've finally won.
I did the same thing with Ghost of Tsushima because I heard that the PS5 version had performance problems.
The PS5 will be my last Sony console. The PS4 probably should've been my last, but I got caught up in the new generation hype cycle. The PS5 has, practically speaking, no games. It hosts a lot of ports from other systems, but the number of unique, new, and interesting games is near zero. Just rehashes from the PS4 era in the form of DLC, remasters, etc.

I don’t understand the bipolar nature on hacker news towards LLMs. On the one hand, they’re destroying the art of software development and we shouldn’t use them. But on the other hand, there’s a lot of excitement around running them locally.
I understand that multiple things can be true at the same time. Is the concern for centralized AI monopolization? Or is the concern for the art of software engineering?
Because HN is little more than a Reddit exclave.
If we’re just another animal that can program computers, then I don’t feel bad about the take over of AI and LLMs as we’re nothing special in the evolutionary climb upwards.
What is the future of software engineering in the age of LLMs?
Apple's acknowledged their anniversary for weeks, especially during the recent product launches like the Neo. It started back in mid March [0].

Are you running Apple Silicon now? I’m still on an intel machine with Sequoia. I doubt that I’ll upgrade it to Tahoe this fall and stick with it until Sequoia stops receiving security updates. Then I’ll have to upgrade hardware I guess… hoping have things sorted by then.
Sometime around High Sierra, I changed my habit such that I don't upgrade to the next major release until August. By then, it's been patched a half dozen times or so. Yes, I'm basically a year behind all the time, but I don't need the new features.

Unfortunately, there are C-suite level roles for this so it will never stop.

And yet again customer demand and financial gain supercede environmental concerns. There’s no hope for a better, less consumer-oriented culture if even the indie creatives among us acknowledge the problem yet succumb to it.
Nearly nobody cares about the load on “national and local government resources, local utility capacity, and roadway infrastructure” for any other day-to-day activity. Why should they care about the same for AI which for most people is “out there online” somewhere? Related my, crypto bros worried about electricity usage only so far as its expense went and whether they could move closer to hydro dams.
It's always about cutting the OpEx spend. Companies are nothing more than giant piles of money seeking to grow themselves in any way possible.
It is, the default UI is stable and can be changed somewhat easily.

Brilliant. This is another piece of evidence on the pile of why we got Wayland: it's because people who understood X11 mostly retired and everyone else couldn't be bothered to learn X11 because it's "yucky C code" or something. And it bothers me that we lose remote rendering with Wayland (unless one fights with waypipe) that was just built-in to X11. Yes, it was slow, but actually if you're running a VM on your local system and using SSH to connect to it, then it works great. Sigh. I'm an old person yelling at clouds.
I have the same machine and installed Fedora 41 on it. Everything works out of the box, including WiFi and sound.

Recruiters, in my case, have either been contractors or employees of the companies for which they're hiring. In the latter case, they're better prepared than those of the former.
Many recruiters continue to reach out to me on LinkedIn mostly, including FAANG companies. All of the positions are either a 3-2 hybrid or completely on-site. In such cases, these companies want to phone screen and have the first round technical interview via Zoom or something. I've been telling the recruiter that, unless the company allows fully-remote work, I will not allow for a remote interview; however I am happy to interview so long as the entire process is on-site. That includes everything that would normally be done remote, such as the initial phone screen. I'm tired of companies (think of some well-known ones) having it both ways: remote interviews are OK for them but not remote work. If enough smart, technical people told these companies "no, I won't allow you to conduct a remote interview for a non-remote position" then things may change.
