I don’t think this is a japanese thing. The way they are askew feels familiar; I have definitely seen food that looks weirdly “off” on other menus. It’s probably just a way to stand out, like how so many models have gaps between their two front teeth. You’re gonna remember the one that’s different.

Usually threads like this fill up with comments about how "think of the children" is always a lie used to justify something draconian. I agree with that to an extent, but for those who think that applies here, is there _nothing_ we can do as a society to address this? I'd like a better answer than "let parents deal with it," and the whole "this wouldn't be a problem if america wasn't so puritanical maaaaaan" argument is total bullshit that completely ignores the young girls who get hurt by this.

I love when the comments start out a little spicy, all the spicy comments get flagged or removed, and the top comment becomes "wow, I can't believe all these spicy comments, I thought HN was better than this."

I think the percentage of people who drink alcohol and have never done any drugs is >50%, and I would bet that the percentage of people who smoke weed (not just once) who have also done other drugs is like 95%. There are plenty of people who will binge drink every weekend but think that smoking a joint is too far. I find that strange, but it is surprisingly common.

Comments like this just make me think people are jealous that right wing groups aren't good at organizing.

This will sound crazy but this is why I still use 4chan. Everyone is anonymous, there is no voting, and the only moderation is to remove illegal things or flagrant rule breaking. It's 99% dogshit (and worse), but if you go into it knowing that, you can find some good stuff sometimes. Not good as in morally good, just sometimes someone will post a link to a video or an article that will actually make me think.

Here, and on reddit, and anywhere with voting or people caring about the number next to their username, it's the most popular opinions at the top and everything else at the bottom or flagged. I genuinely don't understand what people get out of that.

And I guess I should specify that this is also why political topics get flagged. Sure, it probably has a lot to do with people flagging stuff that goes against their beliefs. But I also think that political threads here offer absolutely nothing aside from reaffirming existing beliefs. No one is trying to change anyone's minds, everyone is just yelling at each other. Threads about actual tech stuff can be very interesting and I do learn things from them sometimes. But political threads here are worthless.

Yes. This is currently the best tool to handle python environments and dependencies and it's very popular. If you learn uv, and you really don't need to learn that much other than how to specify a python version and your dependencies, you (hopefully) should be set for a long time.

Comments like that are why I left reddit - they do not foster discussion, they are low-effort attempts at getting updoots. If the only meaning that can be extracted from a comment is "I disagree", it shouldn't be a comment, it should be a downvote. It's a waste of an indentation level.

I would say in that case, the Parent and Child shouldn't need to know about each other - some kind of handler in a different file should.

Although I guess that doesn't work in all cases, like defining foreign key relationships when using an orm (like sqlalchemy) for example. But in the orm case, the way to get around that is... lazy resolution :^)

This is what I thought of too. I really only know python, do other languages not have that issue? In python it does not seem like a "problem" to me - whenever I have seen circular import issues it is because the code is organized poorly. I worry that this feature will lead to devs "fixing" circular import issues by using lazy imports.

Where did the idea that being smart meant being moral come from? Why would anyone assume that people in tech are "good"? A lot of (I would say most) people go into tech to make money. All the people you expect to say something won't because doing so could jeopardize the amount of money they make. The same goes with celebrities, academics, politicians, etc. If you are someone who makes a lot of money, and you speak negatively about america's greatest ally, you will probably make less money as a direct result.

That's fair. For the record, I recently dumped windows for linux and won't ever buy/use a microsoft product again if I can help it, and I will encourage others to do the same, but that decision had nothing to do with politics.

I don't think I actually disagree with anything you've said. I am just very cynical, and while I want to believe like you do, I find it very difficult.

Trying to pin support for israel on one side and not on the entirety of the us government at all levels is either profoundly naive or profoundly dishonest.

But that’s my point - who will do that? Who is going to go to their company’s CEO and convince them to put in the massive amount of effort to switch cloud providers? Who is going to say “I don’t think we should use Teams anymore” and actually be able to switch to something else? I have no idea if microsoft even cares about retail customers anymore, but are there really enough people who are going to boycott microsoft products (I honestly don’t know what those products even are) over this?

I just don’t think they have anything to worry about. I personally think it’s good what they’re doing here, but I guess I’m too cynical to believe they are doing it out of the goodness of their hearts, and I don’t think the real reason is that they’re worried about bad publicity.

I really wonder if a company like microsoft has any real concern over people tweeting negative things about it. It seems like companies are finally realizing a lot of it can just be ignored, but with microsoft specifically, what’s the risk? Who in a position to deny ms enough money that they’d care or even notice is going to decide to do it based on people protesting?

The person who submitted the report was looking to be a person who found a critical bug, that's it. It's not about understanding/fixing/helping anything, it's about gaining clout.
