The top of HN threads is generally nitpicking minutiae which are more likely technically correct than not but also highly irrelevant. It's done by non-experts and drowns out any more valuable discussion.

It'll be people arguing about exact language not being someone's preferred level, or overloading the importance and exact definition of a technical term that experts don't really care about, or blowing up some edge case or another.

instead of 15 years I think it'll be more like 1.5 years.

I wouldn't be surprised if apple were shipping 512 GB unified RAM macbooks before 2030 and that would be standard issue for folks to use local LLMs for their daily work

who cares? I'm not anthropomorphizing, they're just words, they're all made up.

As I've said before, I'm not inventing a large volume of parallel vocabulary that means for each word "this, but instead with an LLM".

Language is FULL of words that mean congruent things in vastly different contexts. We should all be smart enough to understand metaphor.

An LLM is just a machine, you can manipulate it with words.

It can be tricky for humans to interpret the meaning when Generative AI uses first-person pronouns (e.g. "I", "me", "my", "myself")

These words are for the LLM. The user wants the LLM to not use personal pronouns so the user is claiming that they're confusing. It does not matter one tiny bit whether or not that claim is true, the claim is being used to get obedience from the LLM. It is more effective to give reasons than to just give commands. But if it were more effective to quote Moby Dick and that got better results, a user would do that.

This is a method of manipulating the LLM, it doesn't have to be true.

I've given LLMs religion before to manipulate their behavior, that doesn't mean I believed in the great spaghetti goddess.

Your sandbox can be a separate Mac user account.

You can also use native Mac VMs.

Many people have created Mac VM projects to do exactly this, I was working on one but was stalled too often because before I started using claude I bought a new laptop with what I KNEW was enough disk space.

The 100 GB or so I need to comfortably do the VM stuff just isn't available on my mac.

Fable can solve the problems Opus couldn't. BUT most of the time I'm not having those kinds of problems.

I wouldn't say I'm doing anything groundbreaking but definitely at times obscure and that's when Fable has been able to dig me out of the rut. (the alternative I was actually following was reading textbooks myself to understand the domain better)

Observe the sabbath.

Not in a religious way, just have a no screens day every week, once a month, or just once.

You can get by one day without texting, looking for directions, getting an answer from google, ordering takeout, etc. etc. etc. Set yourself a boundary, no phones unless there's a fire or somebody needs to go to the hospital and stick to it. Make a schedule.

The speed helps with that.

Also doing something mindless helps. The dishes, the laundry, moderate exercise.

I can't pay attention to most audiobooks at 1x, I get bored between words.

My favorite part of How to Read a Book is how it classifies books into books worth skimming over, books worth reading each word exactly once, and books worith studying and actively engaging with in depth.

How to Read a Book is definitely worth skimming, but it is quite repetitive and filled with unnecessary volume. It would get the job done at 1/10th the length.

Audiobooks sped up to ~2x or so, but you usually have to build up to that speed.

There are also exercises which help develop short term memory like n-back training for which there are many phone apps.

I don't think people should pretend that an audiobook is a book. You process the two in completely different ways.

Is this attitude a holdover from encouraging small children to read for themselves? I don't know if this is quite the right framing but are you... hearing-illterate to some degree?

Some voice actors definitely add a layer of interpretation, and some are distractingly bad, but otherwise it could not be any more of an equal experience absorbing a book through my eyes or my ears. Unless there was a need to physically interact with the book, quickly flipping between sections or keeping notes in the margin, which I rarely do.

"I didn't really get the full experience until I read it on the page instead of listening" is an absurd statement to me, but maybe people's brains work differently.

There are things missing from text that can be conveyed over audio or with body language in person certainly so those experiences can't be directly translated from real life to the page.

If you start with a doomer mentality it is already very unlikely that you have any wish to discuss anything, you just want to create a list of arguments that all end with some variation of "we're doomed".

Paired with an LLM which regardless will generally be ~80% agreeable with you, the conversation will literally be unending. After each point there will be a rebuttal of doom and very little reason involved on the human side in the middle. Unable to be convinced of anything and paraphrasing LLMs all along the way, the conversation is pointless.

If I wanted an endless disagreement with an LLM I could set that up in my own time, I don't have to do it in public. Or I could find a friendly toddler in their "Why?" phase.

If you'd like we can prime a couple of LLMs with our opinions and watch them go back and forth without us.

Solar energy production has increased 20-30% year over year every year for the last decade. If this continues peak oil production will occur in the next five years, if not 2026 itself. The wars in Iran and Ukraine are added global motivation for this change.

The velocity and acceleration of CO2 and energy production are the far more important metrics.

Lets hope we don't reproduce the PT event.

When/if we really need to we can spend tens of billions to fertilize ocean deserts and trigger thousand mile scale algae/jellyfish blooms and maybe nuke a few mountain ranges in the right places to hard accelerate biological and chemical capture of CO2.

If the ice caps actually melt we can replicate the Azolla event when, to simplify, the arctic ocean became much less salty and freshwater essentially duckweed covered the ocean causing global climate change.

Enacting forced major climate change in a restorative direction is entirely within our grasp to prevent mass extinction events, they just have their own caveats which have to make it worth it before we go for it.

A couple years ago, I would have expected some kind of awakening with global efforts, but the opposite is the case.

The only thing we can do is slightly tweak the exponential adoption curve of solar, it's already here, already the cheapest option, already growing exponentially. We're right in the meaty part of the growth phase of solar and "moral" adoption pushes really don't have much to do with growth any more.

And also there are positives, CO2 is a potent fertilizer and there is plenty of land area which is uninhabitable and unsuitable for farmland which is going to boom with population and agriculture.

We're up for a century of change and migration and people need to change their tune from "oh no!" to "what's next?"

What's next is a lot of migration to the likes of Canada and Siberia and perhaps some active geoengineering building up the new locations around the globe for rainforests.

You have to let go of the past and embrace the future because crying about losing the Earth as it was 200 years ago will get you exactly nowhere.

These are books to train physicists, accessable-ish to a math heavy engineering undergraduate degree holder. The insights above are my own and extractable from this material but not necessarily stated out loud (unless I'm unconsciously plagiarizing which is entirely possible)

To add to this, this "square root" operation done to derive the Dirac equation is where spinors i.e. electron spin i.e. the Pauli exclusion principle i.e. the reason atoms exist at all comes from. Likewise antimatter. The "second order in time" of the Klein-Gordon equation comes from adding relativity and the "fix" reducing that to first order time is the source of antimatter and spin.

So yes very much so relativistic effects are a foundational part of QM.
