Currently using atom and it's package system for a POC for a custom dumbed down editor. I'm really surprised at how much I've managed to accomplish in a week. If we go through with the project, it'll be a joy to work on.

That said, I tried editing the package initially using atom, and switched back to vim on the second day. So it'll suit our purposes, but a terminal based editor still has so many more advantages when hacking on code. (Though if editing a vim plugin were this clean and easy, I'd be outpacing Tim Pope).

I wouldn't recommend linux if your parents keep getting malware. Wipe the PC, and set yourself up as the admin. Create a base user account for your parents, and RDP in to their machine to install programs for them. Or get them to use a tablet. The other option is to set them up with a mac. If they stay within the App Store, they're pretty safe.

And it should. Seriously, there are are less than 2% of users using Linux on the Desktop. Now a fraction of these users dual boot. Microsoft is a business, and it's bad business to spend money you could be using to make your product better to ensure that you play nice with every possible bootloader out there.

In order to be accepted as anything other than an anecdote, you would require a much more rigorous study with a LOT more people and a much higher level of scrutiny. We would want to control for external issues, possibly genetic complications, gut flora, blood glucose levels, liver and pancreas health, illness, infection, cancers, etc...

Hardly, just because alcohol is socially accepted doesn't mean it's not a drug. Alcohol and heroine are considered the most harmful drugs out there. It's an apt comparison.

I wouldn't recommend this. I have over 15 years as lead dev experience, and this isn't good advice. This tells your team that your time is more valuable than their contribution. No matter how good you are, you can't do as much as your team if they are properly guided, supported, and motivated.

I don't know enough about American law to understand this comment. Is there something in the constitution about fizzy beverages not being taxable? That seems unlikely, though very forward thinking for the founding fathers.

Yea, I totally agree. My Commodore 64 didn't even know what to do with the game. Pretty sad indeed. I don't understand why developers choose to go after markets of majority, rather than developing in accordance to what my machine is. I mean, it has 64,000 bytes in RAM, and although I don't have a firm grasp on even simple computing requirements, 64,000 of anything is a lot and should be able to play the most modern games.

Yea, it forces you to use the vim bindings. This is advantageous, since your hands don't leave the home row. It seems minor, but when you actually "get" vim, you'll actually see speed improvements. It sounds silly, the half second saved here and there, but once you've done it long enough, you get into a flow that you just can't get moving your hands to the arrows or mouse.

I agree. If you're on Mac, the tool Seil will allow you to map Caps to Esc. And I use SharpKeys when on Windows.

The downside however is when you're stuck using someone else's computer or don't have root on Mac and Windows. I don't find myself on someone else's machine often though, so for me it's worth it to not have that half second delay.

My commute in is about 40 minutes by car and 80 by bus with walking from the stop. Double that for the return trip, and my bus commute is almost 3 hours out of my day. And the bus pass costs $130. So it's not even saving me a lot of money. It works out to just shy of 2 weeks of my life that I loose per year taking the bus. That's not insignificant.

I was just speaking to one of my devs about this today. Steve Jobs' turned Apple around by removing choice. You had a Consumer and Pro category and they each had a laptop and a desktop. The new Apple is slowly drifting into Dell territory, where I have too many options. It becomes the Netflix problem where I find myself having too many options, so I browse the offerings, and before I decide, fall asleep.

I'd love it if there was, I'd love to kick a couple bucks to Randal after hearing he lost his house.
