I would argue a large percentage of us are creatives and that might have driven us to software engineering. That’s the case for me, at least. I love many other creative things but selected software for my job.

Not op, but, because I’m not a designer, I’d probably try to use an AI tool and maybe give it specific instructions to make it suck a little. Then again, not being a designer, I’d probably make it suck too, but it would take forever.

I’m curious what sensors you’re using? My first thought was a camera up above the pins pointing down that can detect them. There are probably more reliable methods. If it were me, I’d seek to simplify as much as possible so things keep running smoothly.

I see a lot of young software engineers who don’t realize how much you can do on your own and how simple it is.

What’s your preference?

I kinda like the thought but wouldn't a simple action that sends email to the archive list for all senders that aren't on your contact list handle this? That's what I do with my phone, actually, and I might consider it for email too. Then you can manually check your archive when you have free time.

One down-side to this is that it does require you to run the agent on your Mac instead of in a Sandbox. I do this too and there are lots of problems I can't solve in a sandbox. I know a lot of you are throwing your hands up at the years of security practices we're throwing out the window when we do that.

The fact that xAI uploaded someone's home directory, including their SSH keys, is giving me serious pause at my choices here.

Generally, I don't worry about my machine being "blown up". I don't have a TON of unreproducible stuff on my machine. Everything is backed up, committed to git, and the like. I can restore most of it in a couple hours.

That said, I really, really don't want my .SSH directory sent to an AI agent and it's silly to prompt your way around that. You need to block it at the system level. I'm considering a separate user and then 700 permissions on my home directory.

I feel like we're back to 1990's security here. The double-edged sword is that it's helping us get things done at a pace like never before.

You’re not alone. I haven’t looked at this for my own content (I really only publish on the web) but I’m encouraged that it’s search and not analytics. I don’t use Google Analytics on my site for privacy reasons. I’m kinda hoping this works without it, using their data, not mine.

I’ve been wondering if chat is the wrong interface for slower local models (and some projects) and maybe something like a ticket system is a better fit. I just decided how I would test this idea on my available hardware before I go drop money on a Mac Studio or GPUs. I’ll probably have a POC this week. There is nothing novel here, just need to spend the time to get it working for me.

I had the most fun taking pictures with a cheap, low-quality camera that I only owned for a few months before it died. This one might fit the bill nicely. The skill or unknowns of the viewfinder might be part of the charm.

I want one, but they don’t seem to be available yet.

I just skimmed and read parts but I really enjoyed reading this. It's like my own handwritten notes which are just stray thoughts about a subject. Maybe I should publish more of those and I love the idea of just musing about a single thing, like Aluminum Foil (though it's very interesting stuff).

I find it still asks too many questions. Unless I'm not triggering it as often as I think I am.

As an aside…

I wonder why “80 mph” was picked as an arbitrary value. In rural areas of Utah we have 80 mph posted limits and prima facie speed laws. A lot of Utah drivers regularly exceed 80 MPH and I’d argue they do so legally. It’s just a weird number for them to pick.

I have a TRS-80 that still ran last time I tried. It used audio cassette tapes for storage, but I don't have one, so I built a cable to use a modern voice recorder to read and store data on.

I've been wanting to build some kind of project for it that uses the old school nature of the machine with modern conveniences. As an example, it's way easier to create graphics now, but the machine has really limited methods to recreate those.

Today the Mini tops out at 48GB. Gotta go to the Studio to get 64GB.

I agree with the learning aspect, but I have another motivation. I suspect that closed models might become too expensive to run for personal hobbyist use. I’ve been planning to buy a 64GB machine just to allow the limited local models this enables.

Many of these, from the mid 1800’s, would have been printed on a press with metal letters.

I was curious how these were made back then and what modern fonts might look best.

The Studio I looked at yesterday jumped from $2600 to $3400 (30%). I was saving for it and was about 1/2 way there. I was expecting these increases in 2027, so planned to buy late in the year. Apple moved faster than I expected after the price increase announcements.

On the flip side, this makes PC options with GPUs more attractive.

At least you were able to restore them. 25 years ago I was using the service and went a while without logging in. They deleted some of my favorite photos. They were photos I had taken with a cheap $20 digital camera (pushing it to it's limits). I hadn't backed my photo's up anywhere else so they were just lost.

Edit: I see now that there were actually no photos to restore. A second question I wondered is if I could get at those long lost photos (I'm sure they were physically deleted back in the day).

Yeah, I hate the remote, which is why I never use Apple TV even though I both own one and have the Apple TV service.
