I feel that so much. I'm a first generation vietnamese american (born and raised in america) and it's very disappointing to see my own family lash out (at each other or even strangers) when there is some issue where the answer is unknown.

It's also very frustrating when there's such a strong emphasis on the idea that elders always know best and anybody younger cannot question them.

Discipline, wisdom, and maturity are probably the main aspects that I think define how "adult" somebody is.

It's definitely an explosion of complexity but also something that AI can help manage. So :shrug: ...

Based on current trends, I don't think people care about knowing how all the parts work (even before these powerful LLMs came along) as long as the job gets done and things get shipped and it mostly works.

2025 wrap

started committing to healthier habits like going to the gym and jogging.

got some programming work experience under my belt.

started to cook for myself.

learned how to use a multimeter and fixed my house heating.

went to GDC and explored san francisco.

also finishing advent of code is always a highlight in my book :)

This is great and I love it. Very polished work.

I suffered with this problem quite often with my previous job. There would be something vague assigned to me and I didn't quite get what to do but I also felt like if I asked questions, it'd give off a vibe like I didn't know what I was doing so I would just start programming and making a bunch of assumptions.

That wasted a lot of time which is a lesson to be learned from.

I also struggled with self management.

I don't usually read articles and just only take the clickbait headline but this one seemed interesting enough to read after my jog and I enjoyed it.

I don't know if i should be embarrassed for not knowing what is a fruit and what is a vegetable.

I was a recent grad (2023) too but now I think that expecting a job solely with a bachelors isn't realistic anymore. Standards are being raised and it's even more "who you know not what you know" than it used to be. The only thing advice i can give to grads right now is work on what you are passionate about and take care of your health.

i envy dimitri's ambition and capabilities. i want to be able to dedicate that much effort and more into something I'm passionate about. mostly personal discipline/skill issues but MAJOR props to dimitri and this awesome project.

I'm glad more aspects of Vietnamese culture/history is being looked at and showcased, being a vietnamese-american myself.

I fully support young folks being put in those high pressure situations. Lets them learn and showcase what young people can do.

I think there are huge benefits when you put together a team of people that usually don't have distractions like kids, intimate relationships, health problems etc that can hinder productivity.

Even more beneficial to a team when you combine the wisdom and experience of older folks with the passion and energy of the youth.

Sometimes it is weird to see a webpage from my university on here. Usually UH doesn't get a lot of attention for its STEM. At least from my anecdotal experience.

This year I'm going to try to do this in Haskell.

jart is such a good programmer. a lot of people already know this but i just have to give props where it's due.

Reading or seeing things like this on the internet also makes me reflect on my life and think about what my priorities should be, and I'm not really in a financial position where I can just retire and turn the dial all to way to "life" but the best thing I can learn from this is to appreciate the little things in life. Like living in a first world country, having food to eat, hot showers, a bed, good health, etc.

Sometimes I feel like I know nothing because information goes in one ear, stays for a bit, then just runs out the other ear.

Then I have to go back and review.

Repeat.

Seems like a caniuse alternative. Never heard of this until now.
