Wow, you are so confident saying this when you are wrong.

More people want to go to medical school than there are spots open. If you create more spots, you get more doctors. Cost is not a barrier to medical school, loans for this profession are very easy to obtain.

I mean 1-2 years after residency. Most people taking on debt for medical school don't really see it as a huge risk, it's basically a guaranteed investment.

The big downside of medicine is the time in my opinion. 7 years of prime time, but some of the med students I know are enjoying it. A former classmate said it's less work than undergrad.

Banking and tech aren't guaranteed the way medicine is. Other fields are result based, and it's often easy to get fired and be replaced.

A risk averse person would rather stick to what they know (student life, exams) for a guaranteed reward.

The debt isn't really that much. Probably the average is 200k. You can pay that off within about 1-2 years of residency, and interest rates tend to be low since they're low risk loans for banks to give out.

Is anyone not going to med school because of debt? Not sure what problems this solves.

For the long commitment that doctors make and the debt they take on, they receive basically guaranteed highly paying employment for as long as they wish.

There's also a shortage of medical school spots, we can't create enough doctors.

I think this is probably an attempt to compete with other medical schools for top students. NYU is pretty well respected bit probably loses a lot of candidates to Harvard, Yale, etc.

Well games are a trendy area and more fun and challenging to work on than most other software...as long as there is more demand for game development jobs than there are open positions, it will be this way.

Unlike screenwriters, whose alternative is making lattes, game developers who get tired of the chase can go work for a traditional tech company.

WeWork is just a gamble on real estate. There are probably instruments with very similar upside and risk as WeWork.

VCs, probably not familiar with the world of real estate, aren't able to see this. They think they're investing in something new, but it's really the same old stuff in a new package that they're paying a premium for.

Usually I just throw some meat on the grill and put it in a quesadilla or sandwich with various toppings. I occasionally make a salad, but very very occasionally.

I feel pretty full and rarely take in more than 2k calories a day - I'm not limiting intake in any way.

I've never struggled with weight though, just a few pounds after college prompted me to start cooking.

The easiest thing to do to reduce your caloric intake is to start cooking...it's very hard to get to high calorie numbers if you are making your own food instead of eating out.

Oh, and when you're hungry eat a meal first then snack later. Don't start snacking first or you can find yourself over indulging in chips to make up for the meal you didn't eat on time.

I haven't done it because of privacy concerns, but I am considering WGS through a lab then promethease instead.

I don't think understanding risk would affect my decisions much either, but I'd probably get familiar with the symptoms of things I have a higher chance of to be able to recognize issues earlier. If there are screenings available, maybe I'd start doing them a little earlier or more frequently than prescribed.

Well I think that's because they try a lot of things too. It's really amazing how they have managed to excel in lots of places. Maps, Office/GSuite, Email, Cloud, Chrome, Android, Waymo, Search...all of these are companies on their own.

Google manages to innovate by trying a lot of things and shutting down what doesn't work. It's like a startup incubator, and perhaps it motivates employees with the potential for big bonuses upon success just like a startup does.

You are right about there not being opportunities for work in some of these fields, but I just don't think the humanities foster creativity or critical thinking more than CS and I didn't see much interest from the students at a same tier school. If the interest was there it was not reflected in the effort exerted.

I agree that most engineering students don't care much either, but they generally have to put more work in and leave with some practical skills as well as a nice signing bonus + job at the end of the program. Humanities majors can just end up lost, no better off than after high school, and spending their 20s 'exploring.'

Take this with a grain of salt, I recently graduated so these are just my thoughts. Maybe in 10 years when I'm 30 I will say it's better to spend your 20s exploring. But probably not :)

It depends on the venue, loud people tend to aggregate in loud coffee shops etc because that's the environment they like.

You can sometimes cross the street and the environment in a cafe is the complete opposite.

I noticed this and thought maybe it's because in the bay area there are a lot of choices for everything (restaurants, cafes) so everyone gets in their little niche. Maybe in your place of origin there is less variety?

Honestly, the majority of humanities students I've interacted with have been uninspired and unmotivated. I took a good deal of humanities classes and more often than not comments were uninformed and presentations poor quality.

And what do you expect? These students come in at 18 years old, straight out of high school. You put them in college and they want to do the least work possible. And since it's all papers, there is not an objective minimum for the work. With grade inflation, a poor quality paper can still pass you. By contrast, with engineering there are objective minimums. The program has to compile and tests have to pass. You have the structure that a young person needs out of high school, and the work ethic develops during this time.

Maybe about 1% of the humanities students actually cared about what they studied, their output reflected that in the form of papers and internships...when it came time to graduate a couple of the motivated students were Rhodes scholars or otherwise working in their field of study. Everyone else was either not doing much or working in another area.

Most of the time a degree is just a necessity to go into the workforce for whatever field, and those in humanities couldn't give less of a shit about what they're studying as long as there's a degree at the end.

I don't see much of a difference. The majority of engineers I've interacted with have actually been well adjusted people who can coherently think and write.

Alcohol does not provide the massive utility that comes with modern smartphones.

There are ways to reduce cell phone usage without going to a flip phone.

But, if this is what works for the author then I support it. Removing certain apps and disabling notifications will work wonders for most people though.

I don't see why you can't just control your cell phone habits. Swearing technology off is like cutting off the nose to spite the face.

The optimal setup for me is the basic apps installed (mail, messenger, uber/lyft, finances) with all notifications turned off. Less distraction while retaining the utility of having a smartphone.

I would like to know this as well. Does genome sequencing through providers like Dante Labs guarantee that the data is not stores and/or shared? Are some providers better about this than others, and if so which ones?

Also, once you have the data, are there tools to analyze your sequencing without resorting to a web service? I don't mind setting up instances or a cluster for this purpose.

I am thinking that if genome analysis keeps improving in the insights it can provide, we could get to a point where some outcomes are predicted with near certainty. This data would be worth...infinite amounts to insurance companies.
