Another interesting question if I may: Why does one feel the need to be successful? Or maybe one needs to simply be satisfied?

Be proud of your race when it solves corruption, poverty and inequalities... You can do something about it, be proud of it and at the same time watch rockets fly http://www.watsi.org
That's right, there are locations here that literally mean : nowhere
Deep deep underground with lots of canned food, diesel and light that can simulate sunlight... Think Zion in the matrix :)
I'm not too sure Australia would be unaffected, there are quite a few US bases / radar stations etc on Aussie soil...the Chinese/Russians may not like it if it came to a head..Antarctica and Greenland maybe?
People can be wary of new neighbours, i don't see why it wouldn't apply to space neighbours. On a brighter note, maybe we should welcome with open arms anyone, after all, better be nice than not nice!
Thanks guys for clarifying. So am I right to think that they don't have any "identity" that makes them "yahoo" anymore and they just collect rent from a bunch of properties they acquired? In my mind, google is google (identified primarily by search) microsoft is Microsoft( primarily identified by windows and office) yahoo is? ... Is it like if Facebook abandoned social media altogether and became a simple owner of "stuff"?
Last time I checked years and years ago, yahoo was kind of a search engine/directory. What does it do now?
There's no such thing as a free lunch, and many people believed they could mine one lunch at no (or very little) cost and expect that lunch to last forever. That's very unfortunate, but who wouldn't see that such a utopia would come to an end. It's like thinking that electric cars will replace other cars in 10 years or 20 years (there's too much at stake , the environment being last on the list). Even if the public was to embrace a such a "currency", governments would step in (and they did) realising they would have no control. The very fact that it became an object of speculation and was making people richer meant it wasn't a currency anyway, it was no better than property, therefore spawned a bubble as a natural phenomenon.
Bitcoin, like Punk certainly isn't dead.
Bitcoin sounded and looked like the sex pistols a year ago, now it sounds and looks like Green Day.
Oh wow thanks HN, being down voted to oblivion for asking a question, nice one thanks!
If the NSA is all knowing as everybody seems to think, why aren't all criminals in jail by now?
A bit like what Babylon 5 called "mass drivers".
Mm they say it's a hit from cosmic rays. http://www.itv.com/news/update/2014-04-08/life-on-mars-light...
Thanks for the post anyways. I believe it's an NSA outpost sponsored by Facebook (or is it the other way around) :)
Yep, and for the price of 1, you could probably save a life: https://watsi.org
People like their toys even if at the other end of the earth people still don't have food or good health.
It's gotta be one of the best things I've ever read.
Instead of reaching for the fellow man, we want to set ourselves apart, andthus, remarkable.
So true.
Modern life nearly conspires against the collective. We are tormented by a relentless flow of information as well as the daily worries of an eternally insecure, unwarranted life.
Amen to that!
Oh well, then that means I have this alter ego having a life of his own. Imagine this, after 40 years of having a Facebook account, my shadow account gets his numbers and shadow personality "woken up" into an AI system ( for the Brits, there's a kick ass episode of "black mirror" that illustrates this), I wonder how different my shadow me would be :) Imagine after the human race ends, some aliens resuscitate "us" by using the principle above from deep buried Facebook archives... How much more bullshit would this artificial human race be made of compared to what there is already :)
He doesn't own my ass, I don't have a Facebook/Instagram/whatsapp/(whatever Facebook owns or will own) account and never will. I'll never need to, just as people never needed to 10 years ago, Nor will I ever have any oculus rift thingy on my head. So there, he doesn't own my ass! And when Facebook starts buying people's asses for 10 billion bucks, I still won't sell mine :)
Edit: and if one day Facebook owns the internet, then I'll buy a farm, grow veggies and get off the "grid". I'll become a "nature growth hacker" ( remember you saw it here first!).
What kind of hacking are we talking about? Black/white hat? (Is there another kind?)
Just as ridiculous ( and remarkable) as Ferrari's dominance was for so many years with ol' Schumi at the wheel. As long as no one is cheating, whoever leads most certainly deserve to be at the top.
That mass storage device can even be permanently damaged if dropped on the floor :)
Do you think Linux is the last ever OS (or kernel) that will ever be? Sure windows and you and I and everyone will die one day..including. Linux...and Apple..and everything.
Another widespread phenomenon the internet and after it social media facilitated, the ability to send death threats to people "hiding" being a computer (or a fake identity). Much easier than doing it in person. It is unfortunate that for every good discovery or invention, there is always a way to exploit it for less compassionate means, like greed, bullying (death threats included), criminal activities.. True that if we stopped in our innovation tracks just because of possible negative effects, we'd still be using sticks and stones, but it seems that as much as technology as a whole has greatly evolved, common sense and compassion is still not something that comes instinctively to a lot of people in this world.

FB might buy them too. It is sometimes hard to see why big companies buy smaller companies, no matter what you may hear from their "founders" or CEOs, VR is certainly a threat to FB (even if it's a long way away from what it promises)just the same whatsapp was. FB is nothing but a "website" on the "internet" for the mainstream, VR promises to render " websites" and the "internet" completely obsolete and irrelevant. zucky may say that his goal is to have a more connected world, I believe right now that his goal is more to not have the world "disconnect" Facebook and render it/him obsolete. Either that or he just likes to buy expensive toys!
An amazing trip down memory lane! I did so many things with the good old 741 many many years ago, my favourite being making a wah wah pedal from scratch, very simple design, and then I had to go for distortions and phaser effects. nice.
A friend of mine had carpet on his bedroom walls, so when he upgraded from his ZX81 to something better, he took the circuit board out of the casing and had it stuck on the carpet wall, it looked better than having a painting on the wall.
Thanks for bringing some memories back, I had a 520 ST after my Amstrad CPC664.
If water had a memory, with all the toxic stuff we dilute in it, we'd all be dead.
Is there an API available?
Didn't this idea start with SETI@home in the 90's ?
