When you twiddle your thumbs, your thumbnails always point the same direction relative to each other. So the bolts relative rotation will maintain that. Imagine a stripe on the face towards us of the bolts, and twiddling action will not rotate the stripe in an absolute or relative sense.

For the two bolts, this is equivalent to rotating both bolts so the stripe stays in the same relative position, as if one were rotated around the other or they were twisted in the same absolute direction. If you are concerned about symmetry violation because of the direction of the threads, you can reverse the threads on both bolts, with the same result. You can try this with a couple of bolts and a couple of rubber bands to keep them in the same relative position. Then view that system from the head and note the direction each would be moving, away or towards you.

I had to work harder than expected to get this. I interpret the cartoon as distinguishing between meaning and form. Until I read it aloud, I couldn't stop interpreting the strings as

We have a GPS time server (so stratum one) that is set to GPS time, so it's off from UTC by almost twenty seconds because they don't ever apply leap seconds. I love it. Another part of the org pressed me to correct my time to match UTC, but I'm so happy to be done dealing with time changes that I just replied "monotonic time" until they got their own. A few grand to not have those problems is such a bargain!

You prompted an idea I find fun: If film grains are randomly or chaotically distributed, and fractal over enough orders of magnitude, grain might not be error but a medium which interprets and conveys information differently, with unique advantages.

It's so refreshing to be reminded that much of what we're looking at may just be the equivalent of useless self help books. Nobody goes broke oversimplifying problems and selling cheap fixes, and as technologists who have seen the power of technologies to exceed the power of magic, we're vulnerable to believing too much. I'd like to see these now rated for leakage by monitoring, maybe even shorting half the sample. As far as I can tell, all cells now leak, while before it was some cells and aggravated with constant discharge.
