The story isn't so simple. Hispanics have a longer life expectancy than non-Hispanic whites in the US, despite having much lower income levels. If you get anything under 295 ms it gives you the "not sure if you're an actual human being" message. If you get a score of 295-305 ms it claims you have the reaction time of an 18-year-old, which seems weird as I would've guessed reaction time peaked later in life.

A lot of the Gulf states took a similar route. Just look at the rise of the region as an airline hub, location of many satellite campuses, etc.

Yeah, at least with The New Yorker I know what I'm getting myself into. And the authors there are mostly well-established and familiar enough that I can trust there to be some insight buried within the human interest asides. But with pieces like this I can't take that risk.

I wish people would stop making blanket claims about epigenetics like that, but somehow I doubt it will ever happen -- the explanation is just too convenient.

Building model airplanes and drones is certainly popular.

I think something like an airplane is a much better analogy, as it is a complex system in a constant state of flux. It requires constant maintenance and has to comply with ever-changing FAA rules and regulations. It has to adapt to changing routes and distances -- it might be retrofitted to hold more fuel, or redesigned to burn less. During its lifetime, it will undergo several cabin reconfigurations, and will likely be completely rebranded more than once as it changes ownership. It will live through various versions of seat-back cell phones, overhead entertainment systems, seat-back entertainment systems, WiFi, foot rests, tray tables, and power outlets. And after decades of constant changes, it will be forcibly retired. Like software, it won't be retired because it no longer works -- it will just be EOLed because it's old, and something newer and shinier has come along.

I don't buy this. I think it's entirely possible to give someone a platform to express their views on a specific topic without implying that you endorse their views on all other matters.

A legitimate use case for forwarding your SSH agent is when you're working with a bunch of local VMs. I spin up several vagrant boxes that connect to different networks, and like to be able to log in to the VMs and have ssh-agent continue to let me do passwordless login to remote machines.

I suppose you could use ProxyCommand for stuff like this, but it interferes with the vagrant ssh syntax, and makes you go through the hassle of updating your SSH config, which doesn't scale very well.

Since it's HN, I'll note that one of the cosponsors, Thomas Massie, is both a Mechanical Engineer and an entrepreneur. In the mid-90s, he and his wife (also an MIT engineer) started SensAble Technologies, a company which develops haptic feedback hardware and software. He has also built his own off the grid house, and even appeared on Junkyard Wars.

You should email Razib Khan at UC Davis. He's been blogging about this stuff for years. And just earlier today, the NYT announced that he's been brought on as one of their new opinion writers.

I think they do it for the same reason developers often leave 'clever' comments in mundane, boilerplate code: it gives them an outlet for creative expression.
