Why do some people get very defensive when you suggest AI isn’t comparable to humans?

Like, where is it coming from?

Why do people seem to want to ascribe human traits on the tech? It’s just technology. Why do we need to draw parallels to biology? Is it actually helpful? My position is “no” because the parallels only seem similar, but fundamentally aren’t.

You asked for my parrot's take, not how to disprove a conjecture.

Parrots can also sound extremely human, but it’s only mimicry.

How do we know the difference?

Very few businesses care about accommodating "one in a trillion" edge cases. (Most would call that over-engineering IMO)

The listings I saw with AI staging usually alternated photos, 1 photo unstaged, the next photo staged.

Which meant you could toggle between the staged and unstaged photo. I didn’t notice any warping or distortion.

I've been watching "How it's made" on Hulu to fall asleep at night.

I’m constantly surprised by how many things are made with human hands, despite the ability to automate.

I'm assuming "AI images" means realtors using AI to stage empty rooms with furniture.

I'm honestly fine with that as long as it's labeled.

Having just done an apartment search a few months ago, AI staged images are surprisingly good quality. It's difficult to detect it as AI when going through a bunch of listings quickly. But yea, I guess it can cause confusion if it sticks a Peloton (or whatever) in a space where it won't actually fit.

Filing lawsuits against ex-employees is going pretty far. Not good PR for Apple if their claims are wrong.

Companies often file frivolous lawsuits against other companies. It’s much rarer to throw frivolous lawsuits at individuals.

If you have holdings that are locked up, are you allowed to short stock or use options to hedge your position?

They're not wrong, they're just not helpful or accomplishing anything.

I think what it accomplishes is developing a shared understanding of the pros/cons of the tech, the risks associated, how we should mitigate those risks, where the tech is appropriate vs. not appropriate, etc.

It feels very dismissive to say that these conversations aren't worth having. Or that we're thinking about these things too much.

I get that it's tiring, especially in the HN echo chamber. But the conversations are still worth having IMO.

Don't use calculator as an analogy, then.

Calculators are a simple machine that implement very basic rules.

LLMs are in a different category. The parallels you can draw between LLMs and calculators.. just don't make sense.

Now imagine if your calculator billed per button press.

And imagine you can't own a calculator because owning one outright requires too much hardware (or whatever).

How many highways and bridges charge tolls via license plate reading cameras? A lot, it's legal, and I would be surprised if that data was used only for processing tolls.

To think that someone has multiple / repeated disagreements with Dang is wild to me.

TLDR: The insurance market is highly regulated, with measures in place to protect customers if your insurance company becomes insolvent. Corgi does not have those protections, because they've figured out how to offer a product similar to insurance without being regulated like a normal insurance company.

Especially your professional network. You built those relationships because you wanted to use them in the future, and the future is now… so, tap them! If they don’t like that, no big deal, no sweat, move on.

If you’re irritating multiple people constantly, then yea you’re probably doing something wrong. But if it’s one person once in a blue moon, that happens, don’t over optimize for avoiding that. You can’t make everyone happy
