biggest mistake was buying an amd laptop. this thing had gpu crashes from day one, and it got worse as time went on. now just playing a video and closing the lid will crash the kernel 100% of the time. amd - never again

wow, i have a few of these laying around. i also bought some imx678 sensors i wanted to use with them. i tried pretty hard to make a driver work with these but it was impossible to get the isp working without modifying the kernel itself so i gave up. That convinced me to never buy hw that doesn't have drivers in the mainline kernel.
1 is definitely false right now. I gave specs, tests, full datasets, reference code to translate to an llm and still produce garbage code/fall flat on it's face. I just spent one week translating a codebase from go to cpp and i had to throw the whole thing out because it put in some horrible bugs that it could not fix even burning 500$ worth of tokens and me babysitting it. As i said it had everything at it's disposal: tests, reference impl, lots of data to work with. I finally got my lazy ass to inplement it and lo and behold i did it in 2 days with no bugs (that i know of) and the code quality is miles better than that undigested vomit. The codebase was a protocol library for decoding network traffic that used a lot of bit twiddling, flow control, huffman table compression, mildly complicated stuff. So no - if you want working non-trivial code that you can rely on then definitely don't use a llm to do it. Use it for autocomplete, small bits of code but never let the damn thing do the thinking for you.
I recently moved from a docker-compose setup with portainer as a manager to podman+quadlets+cockpit . After the initial pain of migration i'm really happy! I can also manage VMs, volumes, and check systemd logs so it's a good all-in-one solution for managing standalone servers. Also i think it uses systemd activation so it's really light on resources. For someone who dislikes the proxmox approach of custom kernel/os this is a good alternative.
ZKPs are mentioned in the technical specs but no implementation yet. Would go for lack of standardisation / lack of harware support for these protocols as the explanation but who knows..

- Make the preview text length configurable, I'd like to read more of the original post before I dive into comments
- The search is rather annoying. I found the post on hn web then it took me a while to find it in the app to comment on it. Maybe implement a filter on the main page for precached stories?
- A bit of styling / spacing / coloring would be nice. For example the stories feel like they blend into each other. The app is monochrome by design but I think a bit of color could guide the eye on content heavy views

Yes, this is exactly my impression too.. the code for opentelemetry-js is over engineered and adds a scary amount of dependency code. There are quite a bunch of libraries which I'm not sure what they do and in which scenarios I might need them. The documentation is not very helpful either. I look forward to someone implementing a opentelemetry-nano package with only the minimum stuff needed and allow me to choose extra support for my dependencies or an easy way of adding my own wrappers.
Did anyone use this? I'm looking into using it for quick portability between lambda functions and containers because management can't decide what they want.. Though I'm inclined to roll my own compat layer for that, I'm not personally a fan of the api. Did anyone worked with something similar that would help with portability?
I'm sorry but I can't run a laptop without functional hardware video decoding, or even hybrid sleep. I tried my Linux switch this year on 2 laptops - an older 8th gen with Intel graphics and a new one with the latest AMD. Still the same stuff. I need to do lots of workarounds for simple stuff to work properly and some things are just broken. I can't tolerate a laptop that eats 70% of CPU and murders the battery when I'm just trying to watch a video and crashes randomly when resuming for sleep. Windows 10 enterprise ltsc it is :(
If you have a openwrt router than it should be quite simple. Redirect the traffic from the ip of the washing machine to a machine that has mitmproxy installed (using iptables). Hopefully the protocol is https and it doesn't have some form of certificate pinning. That should get you the raw requests/responses.
If i did that i would think the rest of the day at what i have to do next. I have days when I am completely absorbed by a problem so my family, kids, healthy habbits fall into the background noise as i think about it. A lot of times i can't properly sleep, or i have exhausting dreams trying to work out my next steps. It might work for people that can shut off ther brains on command, unfortunately i'm not one of those people.
Anecdotally but i know a few people with adult adhd, including myself, have trouble maintaining an adequate sleep schedule. This alone may be sufficient to explain the risk of dementia
I remember win95 didn't use hlt instruction in the idle thread, it just did the same as linux. Power management wasn't a thing back then. I think ACPI and hlt came with winnt only.
I'm running a few projects from my home on a 10 year old dual core laptop with 16gb of ram. I run docker swarm with nginx for static stuff, 2 nodejs/react apps, a python app, a few sheduled jobs, a mongodb and a postgres db, victoriametrics + grafana for monitoring, portainer for docker management and a few other things. In total 18 running containers I use cloudflare tunel to expose them to the internet. here's an uptime: 07:26:00 up 89 days, 15:50, 3 users, load average: 1.03, 1.15, 1.21 Sure, the apps don't do heavy computation, just normal stuff but i found it enough. Even faster than some aws containers that I use at work.
Unfortunately i can't. Like most of the people here i work in a company, with other people and i can't chose $language that is less dumb for obvious reasons. Typescript IS the only practical solution for web development at scale. I'm stuck with the design philosophy of a guy that's not facing my problems and obviously doesn't care.
I was just writing some python code these days for ida debugging and a simple dump(type, address) function took me 2 days to implement. I still don't know how to get a tinfo_t from a struc_t. The api is a thin layer over the c++ implementation, is very non pythonic and poorly documented. The debugger freezes so much that i had to use the windbg backend. It still doesn't support multi databases, or at least a builtin way for multiple module analysis in a single session. I have to keep 8 windows open and calculate rvas by hand between them. It doesnt even tell you in which module you end up in, or when it does it's wrong. Not fun. The c decompiler is nice though. But i definitely wouldn't pay my own money for it.
here's an idea that will never be implemented because of the paranoia of communism but that i think would be the most beneficial for society. why not create a government controlled non profit for producing out-of-patent drugs? it wouldn't hurt big pharma, it will substantially improve the life of the poor and chronically ill, reduce overall cost of healthcare, create strategic production in case of emergencies, can be a stepping stone to the healthcare as a human right.
Wtf is going on in US? Are poor people that desperate that they consider getting shot for groceries? Especially considering how insane policing in US looks like. I live in a poor country and this is not a problem, not at this rate anyways. There are plenty of self serve stores and there's a big push for self checkout too although people hate it.

What i'm saying is that most of us are willing to give up a bit of security for repairability and saving the planet. Phones and laptops are expensive products in terms of resources used to create them. We're definitely not paying the full price for them. Imagine how much would it cost to extract every microgram of precious resources and capture all pollution and co2 emitted in the supply and distribution chain. Instead we're lining the pockets of megacorps that use every trick to enrich themselves while slowly destroying the environment, the same corps that gives access to your data to the government if need be. I'd say the chance of a sophisticated hardware hacker implanting a rogue chip in your phone is somewhat smaller than the chance of your phone's screen or battery dying in the next year.
