Why do you think competing companies poach engineers from each other?

"Why write code in 2026"..

Because AI generated code is STILL complete ass. Even Fable, even whatever custom Pi/opencode leet code harness you have, the output is awful, and, if you cannot distinguish the quality of your code vs the AI's, I've got some bad news for you.

Chuwi Minibook X 2 months ago

I feel like this is another “Framework 12 vs Neo” type of deal.

I can get a used MacBook Air M1 for £250 which beats the Minibook in every regard and it can run Linux.

- "Let’s not forget that Apple advertises paid subscriptions in notifications and settings pane alerts when you first buy the computer."

I've literally never seen an advert outside of a 3rd party app or website on any Apple device I've owned (many).

This is the thing. I do use LLMs (mostly Anthropic).

It just does not generate good useable code. I have to review every single change to a higher degree than I would my own code because it likes to slip in hidden nasties. I have to rewrite at least 50% of what it generates.

That being said, I know devs who swear that they don’t even write code anymore. Like this rust port. I can’t even fathom blindly merging something his massive.

I use Bazzite for all my gaming (Returnal at the minute) and it works unbelievably well. I don’t tinker with any of the proton version. I just press play.

I recently completed Stellar Blade with zero issues.

I don’t even shutdown the machine, I just hit the power to sleep it. Instantly resumes where I left off.

Incredible to see just how far it’s come.

This struck me as odd too. 7 months? It wouldn’t take that long to write it in a new language.

Another thing I don’t see mentioned is code quality.

Vibe-coded code bases are an excellent example of why LLMs aren’t very good at writing code. It will often correct its own mistakes only to make them again immediately after and Inconsistent pattern use.

Recently Claude has been making some “interesting” code style choices, not inline with the code base it’s currently supposed to be working on.

Zed 1.0 3 months ago

I've found that some of the language servers can really grind up a storm but Zed itself is usually pretty lightweight.

I remember the days of custom launchers on Android. Truly futuristic single-finger optimised interfaces that are long since dead.

My favourite was a “pie” launcher that would spawn wherever pressed in an anime/minority report futurism style. It was incredibly easy to use.

But, instead everyone settled on the rows or icons launchers and widgets. Very boring.

I feel like iPadOS could have tried to push the envelope a bit but they wanted mass market appeal, and nothing is simpler than pushing a big icon I guess.
