This happened to us (Weebly) years ago when we had godaddy as our registrar. I highly suggest you transfer your domain to someone competent like Safenames or MarkMonitor.

SSL requires additional CPU resources, and is often coupled with hardware acceleration. All of this equates to higher hosting costs.

We (Weebly) had 18Gbps of UDP/123 (NTP) traffic sent our way on New Years eve -- definitely one of the larger attacks we've seen recently.

Although the report states "2.4. There are no known reports of end-user visible error conditions during, and as a result of, this attack.", it's not entirely accurate. I personally experienced issues with name resolution shortly after the attack started, and had no idea what the cause was until afterward. If I recall correctly, my name resolution was handled by Qwest, as they were the T1 transit provider I was using at the time.

UDP flood on port 80? With a bit of cooperation from your upstream, this should be one of the easier attacks to mitigate.

Anyone recall the ability to see where your friends last logged in from at their school? ex: "Chris last logged in from Simmons Hall".

I found it pretty interesting they had these names, given the rDNS didn't resolve to anything descriptive.

I agree. Simply disabling an account that was used at more than one ATM within a certain timeframe, based on geographic area, would have limited the damage. Similar to how cell phone cloning is detectable.

that's just not a fair comparison. despite how you may feel about angel investors as a whole, working part time is not equal to working full time. you can accomplish a lot working nights and weekends, but it's generally difficult work, not nearly as productive, and does not have the same urgency -- it's very easy to take a few weeks off from a part-time endeavor, or just to stop working on it altogether.

we've also been very happy working with angels, but it might just be that we've been lucky enough to have great investors.

based on my experiences, i would highly recommend finding a way to work on your business full time as soon as you can.

This may hold true, in certain areas, if you keep the same house for 30 years. I read somewhere that the average American home changes ownership every 11.9 years.

I did a quick calculation on the percentage ROI after 1 year of owning a $300K house.

home cost: $300,000

10% down payment: $30,000

30/yr mortgage @ 6%: $1,618.79

tax at 1.25%: $312.50

maintenance/misc: $200.00

actual mortgage payment: $2,131.29

investment after 1 year (($2,131.29 * 12) + $30,000) = $55,575.48

appreciation after 1 year at 4%/yr: $12,000

percentage ROI: ($12,000/$55,575.48) = 21%

Awesome! 2 Years ago, in college, a buddy and I built the same thing. Our "RFID beverage dispenser" was mostly PC software driven using a USB rfid reader, solenoid valve and key fob. Our goal was to sell these to local bars as self service, self monitoring beer dispensers which could have the ability to monitor a persons BAC. Fun project for sure!

Best way to prevent attacks is by only allowing ssh access from certain address ranges within your private network or VPN.

sshdfilter (http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~greg/sshdfilter/) will automate iptable rules by scanning the log and looking for break-in attempts.
