I thunk they're in a real bind. One thing is the product strategy is a mess—I'm guessing that internally they just don't really have product people and with something like AI, which is cross--cutting, that's really hard to manage. They are also in a bind because everyone is loosing money on LLM tools, and Anthropic, for example, make Cluade Code and can charge JetBrains and the other vendors whatever they like. If you don't have deep pockets you then have to pass the cost on, but that hits your biggest customers hardest, which then pushes your users to the competitor product; It's a pretty tough spot. MS buying GitHub when they did looks more and more like a bargain!

It is interesting this. I moved from Blackberry to Android to iOS and found that quality of the apps in general in iOS just so much better. I guess the fact that more people pay for apps in iOS means it is worth making the investment, but I also wonder if the different emphasis on the platforms influences which developers work on which one.

I found this really interesting. Many of the practices which agile promotes - stand-ups, pair programming and so, are decidedly ableist - not surprising given the make-up of the people who originally promoted it. Good to see some discussion around this finally.

They sort of do answer it here: "Swift benefits greatly from being an embedded part of Apple's ecosystem, but it also provides challenges for its organic growth as there's a lot of dependency on Apple for capabilities that the server ecosystem requires. For example, almost all Swift developers use Apple's Xcode as their IDE and it has fantastic support for developing for iOS devices, including the ability to run locally in emulator environments. It would be great to add support for writing server code that allows developers to develop directly into containerized environments from their local IDE by supporting the simple integration into Xcode of development tools such as Appsody. Where there is open governance and open ecosystems, it enables the community to contribute and to solve the problems and use cases that are important to them."

Interesting Podcast generally but I wss very struck by this exchange "Kotlin and Swift are very similar - how did that happen?

I don’t have first-hand information about why - both projects were started at about the same time, but JetBrains published the description fairly early on."

Was Swift deprived from Kotlin?

If you use OpenJDK you can end up with an unknown version of Java - specifically whatever Debian or Canonical happened to pull from the source tree and ship, which in some cases have been automated top-of-tree pulls before. See for example: github.com/docker-library/openjdk/commit/00a9c5...

I find Pony really interesting. It’s a strange observation given how different they are but it reminds me a bit of Java. When I first saw Java I thought “Finally, a language that takes away the madness of manual memory management.” Pony does the same thing for threads, and Actors feels like a really elegant way to solve that. Obviously Erlang has Actors to but I never got on with its syntax, and Akka but Akka always feels like it needs Scala.

This seems like a contradiction in terms to me. I’d have thought that using a container, even a relatively lightweight one like Wildly, pretty much removed all the advantages of the mciroservices approach because you need so much machinery along with it. What do people use for Microservices in Java shops - Spring Boot?
