I thought I should mention that we also launched a sister-product called https://docparser.com two years. Docparser is basically like Mailparser, but for documents (PDFs or scanned documents).

I really like the idea and I think there might be a lot of demand for this kind of stuff. Did you already do consulting work for customers with this kind of problem? That would be a great way to kick-start the business.

So far, it's the user who would need to decide which document goes to which parser. A routing engine is however on our list and probably be one of the next features to add.

Regarding the stats, I'm not sure yet as we just launched. OCR was however one of the first things early users asked for.

For scanned images we use https://github.com/tesseract-ocr/tesseract. For text based PDFs we pull the text directly from the file and all languages are supported.

We do position based text extraction. We add however an 'unpaper' function which tries to correct misalignments and increases the quality of the scan.

That's right! The user defines a rectangular area and we then extract the raw text based on the position. For table extraction we use tabula.java under the hood.

Customers kept asking for document parsing capabilities so I thought it would be a good idea to start Docparser. For the FAQ I copied some text and apparently forgot to properly proof read it :)

We are doing the same at http://mailparser.io and I can confirm that there is a real need for a solution like that. A lot of our existing customers use mailparser.io in combination with Zapier. Those customers can now directly use the parser of Zapier. Which sucks for us but which is surely great for the customer and Zapier ... :-)

One caveat though, a lot of use-cases are not the static "contact form" email where nothing moves except the values. We get a lot of requests for parsing lists, tables etc. Curious how the chosen approach works on this kind of parsing jobs.

I can just agree on that. My side project http://mailparser.io has ridiculous low traffic compared to other projects i developed. Still it's doing much better than the other sites regarding the conversion and finally the MRR.

this could actually be interesting for event organizers. one could forward their rsvp@event.com email address to mailparser.io and get a csv file back with all the attendee names in it.

i transfer all parameters via json to php and redo the rendering on the server with the GD library.

As written in the article, the technology is meant to understand short queries, in other words short commands.

I guess everybody agrees, nowadays entering commands to any kind of machine is still much more accurate and quicker if you use your hands for doing so.

This said, i think the technologies is in particular useful in situations in which you are not able to use your hands. This could be for example because you are busy working or you are handicapped. So one idea which comes to my mind would be an assistant for handicapped people, e.g. a device which can be used to control an electric wheelchair.
