only when the tide turns, you get to see who was swimming naked.

luck plays an important part, but not everyone realizes it or admits it.

he is not the best. i am very impressed by how little his thinking and writing have improved over the years.

there is always a flavor of lecturing in his words. sometimes, it makes me wonder if i am just too stupid to understand his answers to all matters.

these days i could not finish reading his writings. his twitter feels like a talkative kid who hasn't learned self control. i have unfollowed him long ago.

he may want to be different. but how is he different? really.

No More Google 6 years ago

this is the Google curse. every company will become like Google only if they can.

every of them. the only exception is Wikipedia and i donate monthly.

I remember how good Google was in the early days. most of the “alternatives” could become much worse when they reach 1/100 of Google scale.

I can’t trust “alternatives”.

I never got into this situation, but heard people got options but they became underwater after IPO (e.g. Dropbox). There are several hot startups that had a lot of hype, but turned out just so so. I work for a VC funded startup now, but I feel there have been huge dilution, so I started asking if it is worth it. There is poor work life balance and liquidity risk. At the end, if a company goes IPO, I don't expect to make too much money. Why not get a job at a big company and enjoy life.

Outsiders may think people made a lot of money in the ICOs. I wanted to answer that question so I dug a bit and found out what really happened: a lot of the developers didn’t make much money because they are just like any average people — when prices go up, they don’t sell and when prices come down, they hold.

Some of them even “diversified” their gains into many other projects in the same space, so even it may look great on paper that someone who has invested in many crypto projects must be insanely rich. The truth is many of the had a spectacular run directly into the ground.

The big money is not made in speculation as always. It is made when we build something which will last for a long time and we capture the value in the future (in the next decades).
