What type of projects are you guys building? I bought Max and these features to try it out to build a more complex project (ROS2) and that does not seem to work out at all… HTML page, yes, embedded project not so much.
I’m trying to do something similar but hyper fine tune a model of choice for my specific local data source. For example, use existing code models to answer dquestions with code examples based on my private source files and documentation.
I tried doing it with using Huggingface and Unsloth but keep getting OOM errors.
Have anyone done this that runs locally against your own data?
Music Hackday was great (Infinite Gagnam Style anyone? [0]) and I especially remember Reykjavik 2012 as a personal transformative event! I made Horisfy [1] and and won best hack, very similar to Johnny Cash, but riding horses on Iceland.
This was the time before Echonest was bought by Spotify and Tomahawk (used in Johnny Cash hack) was sprawling.

It strikes me a bit odd and their own website have plenty of listings to choose from, ranging from 500k to 5m. Perhaps the reason was first to ensure that staff can afford housing, but can they at these prices?
If you could afford a $5 million house, what would be the reason to buy it from Stanford and not on the open market? Is it at a market discount considering the cap on ROI?
Would you consider the options available in the listing [0] the cheapest way to get housing in the area?
Im not sure it's comparable. I thought the backstory for living in an airport is something along the lines of the story of the movie:
"The film is about an Eastern European man who is stuck in New York's John F. Kennedy Airport terminal when he is denied entry to the United States and at the same time is unable to return to his native country because of a military coup."[0]
If you were able to come and go, you would just technically be homeless with the unknown benefit to stay in airport for 20 years.
I wonder if "comes out occasionally" means "leaves and comes back" to the airport. Wouldn't that break the "streak"?
As an embedded C developer that just moved to JavaScript, this is very true.
I do not see how take home assignments, leet code questions, whiteboard programming and binary tree inversion can fun and fulfilling.
I want to explore potential co-workers, what the employer would value in me, what interesting hard problems they have, what they do for fun, how they celebrate and how they learn, if they actually code or have meetings, what I would be doing, what they need help with, what I can bring.
I think all of the above can be understood in a meeting or two and should take about 2-3 days from meeting to offer and not be stressful :)
You strike me as a passionate employee that cares about the work. That is a great personality trait, wanted by many employers. Don't throw that out because of politics, make use of it somewhere where its valued instead! Doing bare minimum will probably not be enjoyable; it made me resentful and depressed.
This is a good time disconnecting from current work and explore new avenues. Start interviewing as a way to build up your confidence, visit other offices, talk to other passionate employees, understand what it could mean to be valued in a new company.
Contrary to popular HN belief, it is possible to land a new job, with better compensation and interesting work without participating in complicated interview processes.
At the very least, you have now opened doors to new work should you eventually be fired.

Well, yes. But clearly, the 3rd party project is not the core business but would be if there was no alternative. The company would just develop it them self, if deemed necessary. The idea is that the knowledge would be retained within the company instead. The term "its free real estate" comes to mind.
An OSS project that a previous company heavily relied upon, pleaded that they needed funding or would seize maintenance. As the project manager at the time, I told the R&D manager to start funding this OSS project. In return, we'd get maintenance and features that we otherwise would handle in-house. Roughly a 10kUSD/y handout from a Fortune 500. "How much do we pay today?", asked the R&D manager, "Nothing", I said, "its open source". "Then we will continue to pay nothing". So many companies take OSS projects for granted and as a once OSS core developer, I have seen many sides of this. Don't expect anyone to pay you for the work you are doing, and if you find your self not having the capacity to continue, try to see if there's any other maintainer ready to continue it for you, if not, even if it hurts, just leave it alone...
Building a house is an incredible feat, the caveats of it are hard to understand for the casual bystander. There's a lot of comments here criticizing this project based on personal preferences, it's great that you managed to create something you are satisfied with!
My experience from building our first, and so far only, house are quite different. Having a limited budget (unlike what the blog post let you believe) was extremely stressful due to a large number of economical factors hard to foresee as a novice developer.
Land development comes with so many gotchas and bills needs to be paid, else, the build stops. Groundwork are most important and the economical impact will be great. We also had the romanticised view of "minimal site disruption", and modeled the house for it. In the end, the result was inevitable "site disruption" anyway. Make choices based on what you want, not based on whats there, the site will be so different anyway, it might be better to "create a new one" from start.
I can relate to the post. It took us 5 years from buying land, design grandios, re design more down to earth, permits, sourcing materials and finding-, firing-, re-hiring- local contractors, digging and building, until we finally where finished with the body and interior of a house. The sheer effort in doing this is astounding. We live in a beautiful one of kind house as a result. The one of kind also brings problems; Flat roof, Shu shogiban facade, oiled hardwood floors, limestone, large fixed windows, mosaic tiles. We have it all; great to look at and too feel, not so great when salt from outside makes stains on limestone, dogs make large pee stains on oiled floors, windows unreachable to be cleaned, tiles collecting dirt and open floor plans supporting sound travel more than we could previously understand.
In retrospect, it's very easy to make the wrong decisions, how ever prepared you previously thought you were, as new decisions needs to be made a la minute onsite, all the time.
The author seems well read about the technical part of their house, I cant help but feel they where overrun by contractors deciding what and what not should be installed. It is a shame they could not find a solution the geothermal heating. Nothing is said about ventilation or insulation. Not much feels "modern" to this build except the shape of it.

Actually, they are getting very common in Stockholm and the type of base car is more often a newer more expensive model, like BMW 5 series, Porsche Cayenne, Nissan Navarra etc.

If you mean the extra work is exporting your libraries and having a list of all your sub_projects in the root CMakeLists.txt, then yes.
I think it's minimal work, as I would like to have all my libraries imported and linked anyway:

What is it that does not often work as you expect?
I really appreciate the advice from Daniel Pfeifer [0] where you treat all your build-tree sub-projects as out of tree dependencies, by overriding the `find_package` macro. This way, you can just find project dependencies using the `find_package` as if you were referring to something pre-built. Save a lot of hassle.

I am getting the same Dell 4919DW monitor, transitioning from two 25" Dell monitors. I think the built in KVM will be great addition as I have two workstations. Ordered the new Dell 7750 to pair with a WD19DC docking station. I hope the Intel 630 UHD built in graphics will do, as stated in the knowledge base. The 4919DW only have 60hz refresh rate but I am not concerned about that. A great alternative would be the curved Samsung 49" C49RG9 at 120hz.
Vector of bools contribution of CMake tools for VS Code is a game changer and I'm certain that any other tooling he would be working on is thought out and beneficial to the C++ community.
After reading this rather lengthy blog post, I am excited to try this out.
Currently, dependency management for C++ projects is a PITA.

I agree! I'm trying to migrate an OSS project from circleci to GitHub Actions but fail configure probably one of the most common actions there is: build a (cmake/c++) project inside a custom docker image. There should be a an clear and concise example of this. Even a migration example would actually be expected if GitHub wants to quickly convert users from X service to their CI.

Reminds me of the service that Tomahawk Music Player used to offer. [0] The rationale is, your friends don't have the same streaming service as you have, but you want to share a track. Solution: Generate a track URL that would map to any of the streaming services.
I'd love to use the VSCode IDE launched from the host and compile C++ code within docker. Is this possible? Currently, I write code in the IDE and compile in the container from the terminal. Imagine that, cross compile from any host in a contained c++ environment. :)
Edit: I use CMAKE_TOOLCHAIN_FILE to describe the target env.

Not all family members would consider relocating and leaving their current jobs to become a full time stay-at-home parent, solely because of the cost of living. On the other hand, I know many would appreciate the chance of being full-time with the kids and why not do it in Switzerland.
Its just something to really think about should you be in a position where you might relocate. Either to make sure you can afford child care or that your partner is ok with not working.
I realised that Switzerland is not a favourable country to move to if you are planning to start a family or have more kids.
