I don’t interact with anyone on linkedin other than recruiters. For ephemeral thoughts I put them on mastodon. I tried twitter for a bit but it didn’t suit me. Reddit exists for random things like bike tag and catching up on local news.

This is all really subjective of course, but I dislike that that start button is small, search is big, and then applications are small again. However, perhaps eliminating the start button is in the future? Move the search button in place of the start button and its quite pleasing, to me at least.

I've come to the point where the only time I will take an OS upgrade is if security updates are stopped (unlikely) or if I'm switching hardware. My theory is that no OS "upgrade" will improve performance. Theoretically it could include optimization, but usually includes bloat because the minimum standard is raised.

I use dark grey with no icons. Black is quite stark and it's hard to tell if the display is on. It's extremely rare that I even use the desktop for anything other than to have a window covering it up. An update replaced my background with a photo and I didn't even realize it for probably months. It was up so long the photo was out of season and I barely recalled it being changed.

That feeling seems pretty absurd. Cars get dedicated infrastructure and kids are never allowed out on their own for fear of being run over.

Cars are more massive than bikes and scooters and kill almost everyone they hit at a minimum of 40mph. Bikes max out at 20mph with the exception for a racing cyclist. Also by weight they are far smaller.

Car produced noise, micro plastics, and exhaust also have detrimental effects on the environment we live in.

The list goes on an on. Bikes and scooters whizzing by pedestrians is annoying, but probably not the huge danger that is compared to a car.

I’m disappointed in most of the responses here. I tried to go the tech path at 38 as well and everyone hiring shares the same biases about experience in outside industry and age. Its really a clown show once you try to get hired. I’m amazingly unhirable as an SE, but can find good consulting work in a matter of weeks outside of this bubble.

I tend to agree. I've seen things turn bad on my feed pretty quickly, so you have to really take an active role in unfollowing / delisting content you don't want for the algorithm to work.

Real name policy just leads to threats. I'd rather the place be toxic than exposing people who want to speak up.

I disagree on one point. I've spent much of my career working with remote offices over the phone and with desktop sharing. I have to say, group video conferences really don't cut it. However, one on one calls and video calls work really well and you can get to know your coworkers. Its so much better to have one on ones with others and not have each other worry about posturing in front of their peers. Group video calls are at least just as useless as group meetings.
