My parents run a business making telescope mirrors, and I grew up around this exact process. Measurement is the biggest difference between this and what they do. Take a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interferometry#Engineering_and... if you want to know more about how it's done in industry.

The best metaphor I got from them about how precise a shape they make in glass is that if you took a typical 1 meter mirror and scaled it up to the size of the United States, the biggest deformity from a perfect curve would be less than you are tall - far less than your ability to perceive.

The other thing that was impressed me is that up until recently, the last stage of high-precision mirror making was literally done by hand. My dad would literally rub on a mirror with very, very fine grit to take out bumps on the order of microns. Recently, they've switched to machines in that last step to make it faster and more accurate, but for many applications the traditional way worked just fine.

The "personalization" of the web is not a Google-specific phenomenon. I am, at this very moment, sitting in a session at the Adobe Digital Marketing Summit where a marketer from Toyota is espousing personalizing site content to users.

This practice is being pushed _hard_ to all businesses here as a central theme of growth of the internet. In the sense that this drives better business, it certainly will be. Don't expect to go to Toyota.com and see the same experience as your neighbor anymore.

Other tips, independent of whether you're using Google Analytics or any other tool:

- Plan and set up your analytics early. If you're using Google Analytics, set up goals (and goal funnels) for the major actions that are successes for your business. If you're not using GA, figure out how to model user interactions in a meaningful way.

- Track any and all of your efforts to spread your web presence. Tag links in emails, social sources, and advertising solutions. If you don't know how you acquired a particular customer, you don't know what's working.

- There is only one number that matters at the end of the day: revenue. Understand how metrics play into revenue before trying to optimize for something web-centric like "Bounce Rate" or "Time on Site".

Back-of-the-envelope math:

Suppose Google were to implement the same policy. Their quarterly profits last quarter were $2.5B, and had approximately 30,000 employees. So 10% of $2.5B split among 30k employees means an average quarterly bonus of $8,300, or a yearly bonus of $33k.

This seems like a pretty good bonus, particularly since if Google used salary.com to define their salaries, an incoming software engineer in the Bay Area would make $70k.
