Perhaps a total solar eclipse? Especially so when seeing half the solar system lined up neatly in a row with the sun and moon (and a comet in case of the recent April 2024 eclipse in the US), and truly feeling that one is riding on a chunk of rock hurtling through space, tethered invisibly to that impossibly distant mass of gas and plasma like a ball at the end of a rope...

Still get frisson every time I think about it ;)

mousewheel to zoom, left click to drag works for me on firefox windows

For those wanting to generate some sounds like the above, I made what is effectively a noisy synthesizer / visual demo a while back that can be played note by note on a PC keyboard (or will play itself if left untouched, see attached readme). But to get it into "wall of sound" territory you need to hold down the up arrow and/or space bar for quite a while to speed up the bike until the visuals start distorting:

As a complement to the adjacent comment thread on Shoegaze music, I find a similarly dense, soothing, blanketing effect from some recent noise/drone music genres (especially on good headphones, or out loud with a subwoofer), for example:

The pulsing deep noise of Tim Hecker's Piano Drop:

The gradual crescendo to a wall of noise in Abul Mogard's Like Water:

Conflicting tension + blanket of sound in Siavash Amini's The Wind:

NB: All of the above have a significant low frequency component that may be missed on desktop speakers or low quality headphones...

Custom OEM size/fit has been addressed to some degree for a quite a while now by both the "mainstream" car audio manufacturers [1] and, more extensively, by some lesser-known aftermarket brands [2].

YMMV based on just how old your car is and the type of OEM head unit, but there are kits (e.g. this one for a 2016+ Honda Civic [3]) that allow you to install "standard" head units with a fit/style similar to OEM.

FromSoftware (Dark Souls/Sekiro) Polyphony Digital (Gran Turismo) Santa Monica Studio (God of War) Kojima Productions (Death Stranding) Larian Studios (Divinity Original Sin) Playdead (Inside/Limbo)

Studios who choose/have the freedom to release a game "when it's ready", and/or have Sony/Microsoft backing.

One can hope Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda will change their ways, but having set the release date of Starfield (11/11/22) so far ahead of time doesn't inspire confidence... hopefully they'll have the freedom to push this back if needed.

At least one of the authors of that section ("qntm") has Kindle and print versions of those and other stories on Amazon (search "There Is No Antimemetics Division") if you want to support them...
