I'd say it's Utopia (even though I see what happened in 1917 with good eyes), it would mean the obliteration of a system already too stablished to let it happen (Capitalism), both cannot coexist (or whoever tries it would be casted out just like Cuba was with its socialism).

What we need is having companies aim for more than profit by the end of their fiscal year. As already pointed out here on HN many times, whenever you get VC money, where your business leads is where the money set you to. Product oriented initiatives instead of project oriented ones were a good start, having people own part of it gives them a sense or purpose and let them mature it while maturing themselves. What I really hate about Capitalism is the fact about BigCo or BigVC acquiring SmallCO or pushing it out of business being the standard.

Anyways, I find reading on paper so much better than reading E-Ink as well, got a Kindle paperwhite, and it's out of battery somewhere because highlighting and note-taking (I do it a lot while studying) feels so much better with physical copies. I'm not part of the American system, so my two cents might not help much. Anyways I agree with you that college slows down whoever has a greater learning curve than the average college student.

But it turns ou that whatever comes next and is more challenging, requires a degree (masters program, whatever you pick). So I got to this dead end, where I __had__ to go back to college and finish it because I really wanted to get into a master's program once I'm done with it.

About employment, I'd say it's relative. Big companies nowadays are already leaning towards the idea that interpersonal skills, individal behavior end up being more important in the long term run. Of course a degree has its value, but it isn't the most important thing when you look at someone's CV.

Also, what happens here and seems to be slightly different than the north American scene is that a high percentange of the college students in Brazil have full time jobs or start on internships right after joining college, since the market is in a urge for IT professionals. Saying that, only people on State/Public colleges (which are the top notch institutions here) or with wealthy families, have the change to opt-in for extra credits, different graduation programs and so on.

Just as a conclusion, college is a decent experience if you have the time, and money (unfortunately) to enjoy it at its maximum. It is indeed a really huge investiment, and is still a requirement for most of the jobs, since if you ever get the change to be a project manager or anything like, a MBA would be a nice trophy and for that you'll need a degree for example. I'd say you should graduate, just to raise your employment chances since you seem to be a good self-taught person.

I'll second the opinions of the people who felt lost in the college. I work since I finished high school, and the best colleges in Brazil require full dedication, so no time to work. I regret the fact that I decided for continuing my career instead of dedicating myself to get into a public college, right now I just can't do that, because I'm 22 and would have to spend an extra year working on the admission exam preparation.

So now I have to pay for whatever college I can afford, in order to get a degree ASAP. And man, they are totally tedious, not to say stupid considering it's a college class. What's left for me is work hard on my Masters once I get my Comp. Sci. degree, this time in a good institution, hopefully.

I just rofl'd. But well, I'm still with Posterous. Not changing anyone's affiliate links seems pretty far and making use of the free money on their table is also reasonable.

The idea is actually pretty good. I'd definitely love a blog-engine plugin that would make sure I don't forget my affiliate ID whenever I'm linking something.
