Funny I was just having a conversation about this last week... with gemini. The obvious idea being that this places zig as the main build toolchain for most software on the planet.

Ok but the idea is that you can throw in all your files a stream of consciousness barf and then get something readable that conveys the point better than you could have done with decades of practice. And the best systems would probe you at whatever meta level you stop caring about.

Another way this could go is that you simply don't need to communicate your ideas to another person anymore, that everyone hyper-specializes into their own language, if not just straight up the AI scanning your brain.

The problem is that US AI labs have done everything in their power to alienate real programmers whereas the chinese labs aren't gate-kept by people who feel inferior to pros. If you say you want to optimize this GPU kernel you are fired for "wasting dev time". If you say I spun up an agents in a "loop" and went home you are rewarded.

Even if management was right about "premature" optimization, though they are assuredly wrong, setting up that kind of incentive structure will make top talent leave. Some, I assume, are good people, but they aren't bringing their best.

Once you create an abstraction (like a macro, routine, language) you forfeit the benefits using machine code gives you wherever you use that abstraction, since there could be some bespoke implementation that solves the problem.

Computers and software on the whole has been net negative allocation of resources. We are a major industry that burns time and money while spinning our wheels in the mud. The question is why? Why do you think reading books is a more valuable use of your time than reading posts or watching video essays. One could make the same fallacious "form affects content" argument against books, but in reality authors rarely write stories for people randomly flipping pages, at most the author will tell them or explain why they might want to turn to a particular page. Similarly most content on the web doesn't assume you are jumping to links and coming back, but instead uses them as an index of references.

There are style problems of course, too much surface area, over-reliance on and under-appreciation of sources. There is nothing pure about text. Any form requires training on the part of the consumer to appreciate the "depth". You must be very old, for one the murder rate is at the lowest point since 1900.
