The two comments above mine is a clear example on how mob mentality works. Albeit an impotent mob rage among anonymous internet commentators, but the exact same mentality that IRL usually escalates into violence and later into the killing of a designated victim(s).

Lies and accusations get enforced and exaggerated at every step. From purchasing services from a Russian IT company -> " involved in russian war affairs" -> "the persons running it have sympathies with Russia and their war efforts".

I really thought Europeans got this kind of mentality out of their system in the 20th century, but it's alive and well still. And there will be innocent people killed as a consequence. And people here on HN will celebrate and rejoice in that. They know they are on "the right side", and therefore have the right to do anything to anyone. Just like Mr Putin might think over on his side.

Even worse: many of these (eg, Spotify) hide real access behind subscription fees. If you grew up broke, like I did, you will understand how inaccessible this real access is.

They have advertisements for those who don't pay the subscription. Radio has always had advertisements also. And nobody is too broke to afford Spotify. Every broke young person I've known have had a Spotify subscription, they're dirt cheap.

For the past 25 years, I've turned on the radio about once a year, and every time it's been just sewage. Whether that's government produced sewage or corporate produced sewage. The quality of podcasts and music streaming is on a quality level which radio never reached.

I think the joy of broadening one’s horizons is available to all, and is also difficult to learn and a strain to continue to practice. I think it must be taught.

It depends on what your situation would be and where, when you go back in time. Most people in the world today live in absolute misery, so that's not much argument. The enormous abundance of game animals in the past is just one factor which is mostly forgotten today.

In a world without clocks, no electric lights are needed. The safest and highest quality drinking water comes from springs and streams, still today. Flush toilets aren't needed if you live rurally. And so on.

Not to forget, that the less you are used to comforts, the more physically and mentally fit you will be as a person.

On top of that you have to manage the upkeep of the house, which costs both time and money.

Well guess who has to pay for that in a house that is rented? It's the renter!

Just the same as when you rent a car, the cost for maintenance is included in your rental fee.

You're just as free to move if you own a house: Just sell it, or rent it out. Any inconvenience from doing that is easily worth the money you save by not giving it away in paying rent.

It has never worked and will never work. What has been proven to work is syndication, ie putting a giant amount of content behind a single paywall. Like Spotify, Netflix, Cable TV, other streamers do. Text publishers could easily do that if they wanted to. What I admire the most about this is that already months before passing this law, all the members of the European Commission signed a document that they as individuals will not purchase any new or expensive clothes during their time in office, as an act of solidarity and to show they also take their individual responsibility to reduce waste.

There's no reason as an independent artist to put your music on Spotify or any other streamer if you're not making the money you think you deserve. There's no reason to complain if you did it anyway.

The music is digital before it gets pressed on vinyl. They're not recording directly from microphone to vinyl.

Those prejudices are I think 20 or at least 15 years obsolete. All kinds of people use Macs today.

Apple and Steve Jobs were always taking about ripping your CDs to have your music on the iPod in their presentations to the public.

PayPal has been a payment option offered by Stripe for merchants for a while now. I don't know if there's more setting up than clicking the activation button.

There are many options. If you make a lot of online payments, you'll see myriad payment processors.

what's to stop Stripe from raising fees even more?

There's a big amount of competitors for card processing. Just because they aren't well known within tech circles doesn't mean they don't exist.

Because you can use the app offline, and because you have native UI controls, and better performance.

I think most modern operating systems have app sandboxes also to protect the system.

Yes, for the article example I completely agree that a travel itinerary should never be an app. But it shouldn't be a web page either. It should be a document saved on your device. So that you always have offline access to it when traveling.

I invite down voters to make a reply explaining why users would prefer web apps to native apps, given the choice.

The question is: Why would anybody prefer a web-app over a native app in any kind of system or on any kind of device?

I think the answer is "only when there is no native app for the system I use", ie Linux.

So FOSS people want for apps to become much worse for everybody else, so that they can have the apps also through a web browser. Remembering that everybody else is who pays for the apps and all development, while FOSS people will never pay a dime to software developers.
