Hi, I'm the founder of Le Journal du hacker. Indeed the focus is tighter, mostly tech, Open source/Free Software, individual rights and entrepreneurship.

Enthousiasm is paramount in community work. But managing server infrastructure is more and more complex and it won't go simpler. People should consider joining associations which would be responsible, not individuals. Maybe less servers but larger and better managed ones. Associations are more resilient than individuals.

Great newsletter, interesting to know how you curate it.

I'm supposed faking activity is the game when you work for a large company.

It seems to me this guy should be fired. But good for him if he can disguise his inabilities to manage the transition to full remote. As a employee I would flee such a company.

A bit of history of the project :) We started by using the name "journal du pirate" but lots of French people disliked this name because in French "Pirate" is more associated to illegal hacking, so it would damage the image of the project. After a vote of the early users, we switched to "Journal du hacker".

The center of Paris is something like 13-14k€/square meter... The truth is Parisians with average revenues (for Parisians, not for French people) more and more live close to the suburbs (13th, 15th, 18th, 19th, 20th districts) around Paris and the center is full of company's head office, shops and restaurants. So the picture displayed in the article should figure inhabitations on the outside skirts and accommodations in the center.

At the national level, Parisians are an average really rich population and living inside Paris will continue to grow more and more difficult because living in Paris is nowadays a luxury. And nothing will change this situation in a close future.

I strongly agree, as I said in the article by license using VSC your renounce your rights to reverse-engineer the VSC. So you take a legal risk making it and blogging/talking/podcasting about it on Internet and can face legal actions.

I agree, full migration profile is quite needed. But the project is still quite young and improvments were alreday brought for this feature.

Peter Levels https://levels.io/ offered early access to his currently-writing book ... and published it officially 2.5 years later. I could be wrong about the exact timeline but you get the point.

I started freelancing in 2012. Some years after, I started to understand I could never be rich or dissociate my income from my time while freelancing.

Started to build side projects 2 years ago. I roughly get $700/mrr with my 1st side project and my goal this year is $1.2k/mrr in 2018. So still far from being a full-time gig and still freelancing but increasing other revenues, which is my long term goal.

I just implemented the payment system on my job board https://www.linuxjobs.fr but it was not yet mandatory to pay to post a job offer. Someone thought it was and paid!

Just the "Wow" moment of my side project :) Of course I switched immediately to enforce it was mandatory from now on to pay to post job offers.

A real hacker move would be to just leave Twitter and go to Mastodon https://joinmastodon.org

I started Le Journal du hacker [1], the French-speaking Hacker News-like website 3 years ago. I was mostly alone for one year feeding the website until the first regular contributors (now co-founders) showed in.

Good things come to those who wait (and work hard).
