One contributing factor I experience is that keeping competent, opinionated, leadership who are a good fit is an expensive proposition, and the "hold fast" position will always be challenged by whatever board is scrutinizing the budget/plan/forecast. The only play where no top brass has to catch a parachute is to bring in a consultant to scrutinize the business, read the crystal ball, and pitch a plan to weather the coming storm. Medicare funds are dust in the wind, Covid-era opportunities are dead and over, and the big axe has swung so much it needs sharpening. None of these are easy decisions to make and the result of "we're still doing what we're doing" is success.

Most foods taken from nature will still rot in their naturally-sealed forms. Pressure canned foods last a long time but use far more robust and energy intensive processes than a thin layer of wax and "the way that it is" to seal and stabilize the contents.

Ferments could be an outlier but usually dance on the edge of rot by design and can last longer than the raw cabbage or milk or meat they start from, but like honeycomb, they must be carefully stored.

Tilapia, because the grow-out plan is very well documented. I'd happily sacrifice growth rate for a fish with higher "desirability" factor, and perhaps a lower optimal temperature. I previously tried Bluegill and lost them, I think, due to stress from temperature variation. I'd like to try them again or go with Catfish. Catfish are the top species (for food, by weight) produced in the US, and they seem nearly as durable as Tilapia in small systems.

There are so many tools like that where the application specifics ( species, system, life stage ) could make room for a scalpel-precise optimization of some tool, but the benefits would have to come from scale, and there just haven't been many first-movers ( or they keep quiet and defend the moat ) who seem poised to raise the tide for the whole industry. It is very ripe for the work you are doing to help the downstream gains over generations of stocks.

As a home aquaponics grower, I am really interested in the opportunity to develop tools that help this industry grow smarter. The impact to open-water fisheries can be undone if the markets can be affected to appreciate farm-raised fish for their quality.

I think there is such an incredible opportunity in the sector, and it probably looks a lot like any of the other sectors that have been augmented by data - gather giant piles of any measurable detail, and hope that after filtering you see a pattern that doesn't depend on your production environment running as many sensors ( or tensors ).

Last Thought: Fish transfer pumps are not only a thing, but one of the best ways to have the whole pond population march past your camera in a lighting environment where you have more control.

The magic here is that all of the components beg for this sort of thing as an obvious next step, but this seems to be done really well. The value is always in the integration of the component systems.

A factor I hadn't realized that is implicated in this transition is the shift from the Teacher-led classroom to the device-led classroom. The Lay use of 'analog' is far removed from function. As long as there isn't a screen, it isn't seen to be digital. I studied photography in college and loved shooting film. I have a processing machine that is based on a 6502. When people would talk about non-digital things as analog it would bug me (One is chemical, and one is a computer).

I used to use that clip to inspire people to laugh instead of groan while troubleshooting, and I honestly understand that for a product manager, it’s the wrong answer. But for a huge section of the population who don’t have a ground truth against which to evaluate LLM slop or where the definitions are not clear enough, I see often the only measurable thing is time and therefore it becomes the benchmark of good.

It seems like that could be done with a system shipping their own white-labeled GNU Health app through the App Store

Certainly both is the goal of the aquaponic setup. There are about 50 tilapia in it now, and a grow bed with lettuce and bok choi and similar greens. The plan is to add more plant space to accommodate the growth rate of the fish. When they’re small they eat less and support fewer plants, but as they grow I’ll need more plants to clean the water.

The greenhouse supports many other things, growing 100% of our food isn’t a goal, but supporting our food and having seasonal abundance to sell or give to neighbors is. We start more than we can use, and surplus in seasons is the goal.

I have a lots of the parts I need, especially for the monitoring, but this iteration of the greenhouse required removing a lot of it, and it hasn’t been set back up.
