It's easier for AWS for accommodate all their customer's needs (MySQL, MongoDB, Postgres) and reduce the cost of switching than it is to convince them to rewrite an application or legacy application to leverage say DynamoDB. The benefit of DynamoDB is great, but it's just one slice of the computing pie.

Dropbox: I can upload a file super easily and share a simple & secure link with someone who just has a web browser.

FTP: I can upload a file to an FTP server I've either configured on my server or rented online. I'll then provide an FTP url to friend with instructions on how they should login and what FTP client they should use on their chosen device.

The problem with WS is that is significantly more complex than HTTP when it comes to caching.

With WS you can’t leverage a CDN hosted solution and instead would need some complicated CDN that is aware of state.

I like HTTP because it just works, especially behind buggy corporate and mobile network firewalls.

If you're going to do illegal stuff, I don't think carrying around a lot cash if going to weigh too heavily on your mind. You're either going to carry it in a car or have a person carry it for you.

How is this measured? I think the usage of their mobile apps is significantly greater than visits to "facebook.com", you could argue then that more customers are moving to apps only.

They are a container company, not a scale your blog + scale your database + scale your cache + scale your security company.

Because a blog at scale is still a complicated piece of software? You need to implement caching, DoS protection, security - something a hosted blog vendor might have experience in.

I don't understand why companies take on hosting their blog and marketing page (usually the homepage) when it isn't their core competency and a distraction for the engineering team to maintain.

It looks like this is true for Docker which seems to be hosting it themselves instead of using Wordpress.com
