I don't see for all the world how this isn't an utter failure for both the management for this project and the ultra combative style that the previous and current California gubernatorial administrations approach just about any and all dealing with the feds since Trump was elected. Have a feeling this might be where 'more red meat for the base' might have met it's match in terms of cognitive dissonance for at least some California voters.

UPDATE - : CA Governor Newsom this afternoon (via Sacbee): "The Trump Administration’s action is illegal and a direct assault on California, our green infrastructure, and the thousands of Central Valley workers who are building this project,” he said. “Just as we have seen from the Trump Administration’s attacks on our clean air standards, our immigrant communities and in countless other areas, the Trump Administration is trying to exact political retribution on our state. “This is California’s money, appropriated by Congress, and we will vigorously defend it in court"

Exactly the type of rhetoric, attitude, and threats that help push this situation in the first place (well, along with the gross mismanagement by the state for years) and he still can't quit digging.

Well, I've reached 'resignation' if not nuance in any case. Or maybe that is a nuance.

I've been developing since 2000 in some form or other and have gone from a true believer who thought the internet would save the world, to someone who thinks it's had an immeasurably negative impact on any number of levels.

That said, comparing it to smoking is not broad enough. It's more like social media (and by extension the internet) is more like the 'new water' - a fundamental aspect of living whether we like it or not at this point. For instance, even if you don't partake in social media, the top political figures of the day are, and thus your life is being directly affected one way or the other.

Besides Facebook banning search engine indexing of itself the search functionality of Facebook itself is terrible. I belong to several groups and I've seen numerous examples of content, which I know is in the group, not showing up in search results while using very straight forward and matching searches.

gizmo686 - For you this may be true. I don't think you can speak for everyone that comes to this thread though. I've said as much as I feel comfortable and safe to say given how hostile the internet and 'discussion' about certain subjects have become in general.

This is very telling to me that I get down voted for having a differing worldview opinion. Social justice for all unless they disagree with you, eh.

Without going into specifics that would surely prove to be incendiary to some, this whole thing makes me feel like some portion of the world has completely lost it. If you feel differently than me or hostile towards me for saying so, that is your right, but I wanted to have at least one comment on here for posterity for anyone else who feels the way I do so that they do not feel alone.

This is not hard to imagine at all. I know that there must be some absolutely excellent doctors out there, but I don't trust the bottom 80% of doctors much at all, and honestly would rather have an algorithm most of the time, especially starting off. The lack of robust consumer level 'medical doctor apps' is one of the biggest mysteries to me.

I really can't believe that 'OLED touchbar' is the lead off for this thing. a) if I hear 'OLED touchbar' one more time, think I'm going to freak/gag, b) if I cared less about anything regarding a mac in my life I'm not sure what it is.

The whole hosting issue seems to open a can of worm, at least if this comment stream is any indication. I think it probably would have been better if they stated something more along the lines of, 'Choose (and likely expect to pay) for some sort of superior hosting solution which will prioritize allocating resources to your site(s)'.

The general point could be made without leaving so much room for everyone to argue over specifics.

I'll just reply to this comment since, I basically want to echo the same things. One sure way to get me interested in a Linux variant would be to iOS'ify the Mac Desktop. I can think of few things less interesting or desired from my Mac experience.

Overall, what a disappointing set of ideas put forth by this article...

In a development world that is already rife with planned obsolescence, the Javascript world is the shining jewel. Reminds me of trying to construct the killer Yu Gi Oh deck. By the time you get all the cool cards, paying a small fortune for them of course, a new ban list comes out, new decks come out, and you have to start all over again. Is the game improved through all of this? Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but I would say that this question becomes beside the point for many players...

I've gotta say as someone who is not actively developing full time, most of the comments in here read like people in denial. It doesn't really matter what anyone's opinion is, or what any of us say though - the future will bring what it brings. That said I hedged my bets a couple years ago against the tech world's macro economic future and culture.
