I've read the comments here and quite surprisingly there are a lot of folks saying that the value of this hack isn't worth more than roughly one year's salary at Twitter (as an intern). I appreciate the pragmatism, but unlikely.

Anyone with this kind of exploit could have sold it, moved to Russia, and received immunity from extradition. Secondly, people should be scrutinizing any moron willing to give away thousands of dollars to billionaires for a promise of a 2x return. Especially in these times.

So, reason can only allow us to arrive at a most likely cause. That this was indeed an inside job. It was not about money. It was not a security flaw. But rather, it was simply a group of employees that were unhappy with Twitter allowing the federal government to investigate bad actors on the platform behind closed doors.

If there was any way to translate the legacy code running on mainframes into a Java application, naturally, there would be an infrastructure migration issue. The new plan plainly states that the infrastructure is dependent on: "Establish Cloud Management Office and Cloud Governance", which also depends on installing the new "Procure and deliver ECM Release 1 Cloud platform on Treasury Cloud".

This stuff takes a lot of time and they've been preparing for the change since 2015. This is entirely not simple.

In no way do I mean to take away from the really great work of these researchers, but there is one thing here that people should be aware of. By using karaoke style lyrics, this scientific study invalidates itself and the credibility of those that went forward with publishing it. By reading the lyrics while listening to the audio, the brain will automatically convince the listener that the audio result is better than it is. What is the proof for this? Well, look no further than the infamous Yanny/Laurel audio clip. When you read the word "Yanny" or "Laurel" at the frame rate of the audio, your brain switches between two different auditory suggestions.

These researchers may not be to blame for this, but they really should have been honest in their conclusion.

All your points make sense. Also, Wolfram is trying to create a language and tool for others because he very well realizes that his part in all this won't be solving those 7 things.

The internet is definitely, and I still stand by this comment, unarguably terrible today, compared to what it used to be. Is that anyone's fault? Probably not.

People used to download MP3s from AOL chat rooms. There were these people that just served up their music libraries using a chat bot for other people to request downloads.

Once you had enough tracks, you could serve up your own bot to let others share in on the fun.

I can't blame progress for killing culture, but I'm glad that back then, something like serving up an MP3 library in an AOL chatroom was a deeply awesome experience.

The internet is arguably* terrible today. There are about four websites that most people visit each and every day. And of those four websites, they're most likely owned by one or all of the five largest tech companies.

Before social media, people built their own websites just to put their art out there. Now everything runs through a walled garden, and to your point, it's easier to tweet than to go build a website no one will visit.

You're spot on. But really... all people are basically the same. And like Google, they're incentivized by the system to be horrible to each other and/or horrible to the environment. I think people all have a choice. But I think the good choices are really hard to make when you're only surrounded by bad choices.

I think that problem is a non-linear one. I'm pretty sure that it's not possible to predict the behavioral outcomes from the reactions of emotional states. The science only goes so far as to provide a proof that it's possible to polarize sentiment by identifying the community bridge in a network. That bridge would be the user that has optimal influence in both groups.

Schizophrenia is a grouping of symptoms that are generalized to an inability for a person to smoothly track reality. For example, when a person without schizophrenia attempts to track the trajectory of an object, the eyeballs follow a smooth path. When a person with schizophrenia attempts the same, the eyeballs do not follow a smooth path, with the focal point moving chaotically off center from the target. A part of the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia is testing whether or not the eye can smoothly track the movement of an object. This would likely be why it is difficult to diagnose someone that was born blind.

Von Neumann was a friend and colleague of Claude Shannon, the founder of information theory (mathematical theory of communication). Back then, it was a really small world of scientists working in this field. Von Neumann, Turing, and Shannon spent a lot of time complimenting each other's work. Shannon eventually discovered that information encoding/decoding is optimally done as a collection of bits (the name was later coined by John Archibald Wheeler "it from bit"). At some point Shannon recommended to Turing that his machine could be whittled down to only two states. Von Neumann was inspired by Turing's work, which led him to create the Von Neumann architecture. Von Neumann was brilliant but he relied heavily on Shannon and Turing, and vice versa.
