Funny thing is that I'm neither ideological, nor ranty or political about it. But if pointing out the obvious gets me a ban here than I will gladly take it. Wouldn't want to participate in any anti intellectual forum where everyone pretends politics and propaganda doesn't exist anyway.

If you don't like politics as much as you claim you do, such stories wouldn't be allowed here. This is not hacker related, not news and not tech related in any way. The only purpose of this story is to improve image of muslims. It doesn't even matter if this is real or not - the fact that it is published is what matters , clearly showing intent. And the fact that you leave the story up while removing harmless comment which was just a hint that the article is likely political, means you, and probably HN in itself, is willingly participating in the propaganda.

I knew HN was overwhelmingly pro muslim, but I had some hope you would at least stay away from actual political propaganda. Good luck on your censor job. HN won't be missed.

At the point where merge is possible, human + machine will probably already be inferior to machine only, in other words human would only make machine worse. Or at the very best, the human+machine period will last for very short time.

Example is chess - there was a brief moment, where human using computer would outperform computer alone. That moment passed and that's it, humans can only weaken AI.

This can be said about 99% of all the jobs ever. You don't get paid to have fun. There's this weird expectation in software development community that you can find a job that is fun/interesting/intellectually engaging AND well paid. Guess what - big part of your compensation is specifically because the job is BORING and nobody is willing to do it.

Not sure what is your definition of "source code", but I'm pretty sure nobody counts external library function implementations as source code for the program. Same as you don't count OS kernel as part of your program's source code.

What about it? Any collection of rocks put on a grid with certain rules can become "conscious". Neither your little awareness of yourself, nor someones feeling of "endlessly strange" things mean anything when talking about whether universe is holographic or not.

Nobody wants to watch a show with mundane, uninspired, boring everyday characters, that have nothing special about them. OP needs to learn about tropes and character design before criticizing, because he clearly can see only his point of view.

I haven't read it, but at least for me it seems like common sense that these 3 things have positive effect on motivation.

If you have autonomy over how you complete your tasks for example, you will do it in, according to you, most efficient way, and that will make you feel satisfied. Mastery is from the same desire to be as efficient as you can. Purpose is something different, but you can clearly imagine how much more willing to do your best you are when you know that the thing you do will be seen and used by other people and how it will make people's life easier, for a primitive and simple example.

Compare it to my job - software is bloated, something I myself would never use, our customers are actually forced to used, almost nobody, except the people who earn money from it at the management, likes it, and often you find out that some bug that existed for a year and that completely disabled some functionality was never noticed because no one, not even testers bothered to check those parts of the system. Combine that with heavy restrictions on what can be done, both by time restraints on tasks and by accumulated technical debt that makes any improvements economically not viable, and add the natural tendency of such systems to resist to anything new and you get individuals with gradual decline in motivation over time.

I understand why there's such an ageism "problem" in the industry - the only way to make these companies with these systems afloat is to hire only young people who aren't worn out from these things yet to keep it alive. From my experience, I don't know how it was a couple of decades ago, but it seems like younger and younger people are getting their motivation destroyed by such environments.

You don't often see occupations where people are already sick of their job in general by late twenties to the point of considering switching profession that would pay considerably less.

So the author says the obvious, what motivates developers is autonomy, mastery and purpose. But he didn't say a single tip on how to overcome demotivation when all these are denied, as is in majority of corporate job positions. Communities won't bring you autonomy, mastery or purpose to your job.

It might bring these things to some side project you are doing, but you are still as shackled by higher ups, as denied of personal growth and as purposeless as it was before joining the community. So money is the only real answer. Money and a threat of being fired because of bad performance, which would result in very bad economic situation.

Majority of people who become homeless are actually mentally ill and that is the main reason for homelessness. I'm afraid this might be the case as well. I can see him walking into interview, acting obnoxiously, being twitchy/shaking/sounding desperate, talking chaotically. Healthy people instantly feel, especially those who are trained to read a person from his interview. He probably came off as a mentally ill, and probably is, which got him turn down. Everyone just tried to be polite with "not fit for company" line, because telling you are mentally ill might land a lawsuit, and because it's basic human decency.

If you are the author and you are reading these comments, hear this: mental illness is a serious condition that can quickly degrade your life to nothing. It is not unbeatable. Just seek medical examination explaining your situation. If your joy of development is back it may mean your worst part of the episode is already over, and with assistance you will be back on track much sooner. Good luck!

For me it's to spend your time being happy. Nothing else really matters. If you spend your life being unhappy and feeling bad, remember that you will die and that will be it.

Your described method of understanding his moves might work for some moves, but there will inevitably be moves that are just a sum of so many different probabilities that are so far down the road that even looking at the result nobody would be able to actually recognize such a move on slightly different board.

At some point, if this method would be used, it would probably require a second AI that would help understand the main AI, because the primary "explanation" would still be too complex and/or subtle for us to comprehend.

And in addition to that, winning condition is also extremely fuzzy. Looking at the Master games, I couldn't tell why he is wining at all, granted I don't know much about Go.

So if it requires some experience just to recognize a winner, and as far as I know sometimes even professionals can't tell for sure who is wining, it's pretty safe to say Go game is just too complex of a game for humans to come to optimal strategies in any reasonable amount of time.

AlphaGo creators could "rewind" the whole program state to that move and inspect the tree search probabilities according to the board states it looks through to find a list of board states that generate a cumulative highest probability of wining by doing a move in that exact odd spot.

My guess would be that while humans tend to put stones with a single, double, or sometimes triple "reason", or in AI words, "high probability of local effectiveness in upcoming several turns", AlphaGo, with his ability to see further, can see past the local effectiveness into more global effectiveness and higher probability of winning further down the road.

In other words, those tenuki moves might actually be past the event horizon of human understanding, but only if inspected by looking at them and thinking ourselves. If we use AlphaGo itself, it should be possible to find out the reason for every single tenuki it will ever do.

The premise for the article. But it provides no proof of it. And I can just as well say "for me it seems software in general have gotten much safer over the years, because I barely remember a time a program crashed."

They have made so that an article that cultivates discussion is actually penalized, softly silencing any topics worthy of discussion here. Now they outright ban things. Might as well just disable comment functionality if they don't like people opinions and ideas that much.

I don't know how much the idea is accepted within the community, but for me the most probable case seems to be some guy writing half truth (real plants, constellations), half fiction (imaginary plants and mechanisms) with either made up or intentionally very unknown, even at the time of writing language, script as a hobby/work. The illustrations, even the strange ones, fit the art style of the time pretty well, and if there were people willing to buy things like that, why not make it?

Seems perfectly reasonable course of action to produce it, only thing that's strange is that there aren't more these kind of scripts. Or there are, we just haven't heard of them because they were either in known languages, or deciphered?

Well, technically, all scientific knowledge is belief. There is no "knowledge" as some guaranteed to be correct entity. Everything is a belief in the brain. The difference between religious belief and scientific belief is confidence level. What we refer to as "scientific facts" are beliefs with very high confidence level due to countless testing in real world. It may not be apparent that laws of physics are a shared belief, because we are so certain of them being true, but there are plenty scientific results that are barely higher than religious beliefs. Especially medical, sociological studies, etc.

And to continue on your point about religion - just because someone somewhere thought up of some idea, that translated to modern language and interpreted in modern knowledge framework sound similar to some of the obscure theories that are not yet falsified is nothing but unexpected. It would be hard to believe that from countless works of fiction that were produced during thousands of years around the world, none of them gad anything that resembles some strange theory. It literally shows nothing - neither that these unverified theories are right, nor that some ancient people had some superior cosmological knowledge we are just discovering right now.

Then you sound condescending and all-knowing, when the real answer is - we don't know. It may be AI, it may be fluctuations, it may be some experience based thing, they are all different and are not "ways of looking at it". Don't pretend to know more than you do.
