human interactions are positive to participants pretty much if and only if those interactions are repeated

One-off interactions are almost invariably toxic

I think these claims are too strong. I can believe that there's less incentive to treat people well when you don't expect to repeat interactions.

To give a mundane counter-example: last week I had a flight where I chatted on-and-off with the person next to me. I had zero expectations of repeat interactions with them following the flight, and it was still a friendly and courteous exchange, on both sides.

I thought of the same parallel when reading the post.

I've recently read Outlive for health advice. On its recommendation, I've taken up regularly walking with a loaded backpack of 20-30kg ("rucking").

The basis for this recommendation is that until recently, people would have been exposed to carrying weight in day to day life, but an increase in our daily convenience has reduced this more and more.

I can see that there would be benefits in doing the equivalent thing mentally as physically. "Rucking" for the mind.

Outlive also recommends mental exercises like learning an instrument or new language as potential ways to stave off neurodegeneration.

This is a nice idea, in line with the Slow Journalism movement [1].

I subscribe to Delayed Gratification [2] since I find the slower, more considered reflection and summarisation much more satisfying than the overwhelming deluge of up-to-the-minute news alerts that flood my phone.

This seems aligned with that philosophy, nice work. I look forward to not hearing much from you soon!

Ah, nice. I initially interpreted silver as age (grey hair) but that made me intrigued: age can make you jaded but can also give perspective to appreciate the good.

It works on different levels, I guess. =)

Your last paragraph reminds me of this research on more advertising leading to less contentedness: https://hbr.org/2020/01/advertising-makes-us-unhappy

Showing us what we don't have makes us question and think less of ourselves. It's the same mechanism that can lead to lower mood after seeing everyone's carefully curated lives on social media. Everyone around me is happy all the time, why aren't I?

Once you're concious of that bias, it becomes a bit easier to weather, but also uncomfortable in a different way. Personally, we want to share pics of our baby smiling with our friends, but will that make them feel worse when their baby cries for hours? We've been sharing experiences more openly with new parent friends so they understand it's not all rainbows all the time, and have been grateful for others who have done the same to us and reassured us that everyone's taking the bad with the good.

Biolite does this. Traditional stoves produce a huge amount of smoke which is bad for people breathing it. BioLite reduces the smoke, but they found that men were usually in charge of purchasing decisions and weren't around when cooking was being done, so had no incentive to invest in the smokeless stoves. Adding electricity to the stove meant that men were more likely to buy, thus helping their family's health.
