I read this entire article but I’m still confused. What exactly is the financial motivation for keeping units empty? And is the concern the fact that the units are empty or are they concerned about the conditions of the empty units?

I don’t remember NYT. But I recall the other major poll site Real Clear Politics had an election map with a percentage chance for each state and they had Hillary at 99%.
Their mistake was that they treated each state as an independent event. Treating each state as a separate biased coin toss leads you to put Hillary at 99%.
Nate knew that these are not independent events and if republicans are being under polled in one state, it is more likely they’re being under polled in all of the states.
I see “blocklist” becoming more popular in programming. But it just occurred to me how bizarre and out of place it would be if the parent comment said “a blocklisted word”.

Might I suggest a spin on this: instead of blocking the IPs, consider serving up different content to those IPs.
You could make a page that shames their domain name for stealing content. You could make a redirect page that redirects people to your website. Or you could make a page with absolutely disgusting content. I think it would discourage them from playing the cat and mouse game with you and fixing it by getting new IPs.

Basically, big tech is a god, a fairy tale, a delusion, pushing unnecessary technology on all of us, and praying on poor tech workers by dangling stocks in front of them, and having big problems with racism and sexism. And now that there are layoffs, everything should be clear now that Silicon Valley is all a giant lie.

Make a version that uses different frequencies for different major companies.
People just use whatever their programming language provides. There's a concept of sorting "stability" in which equal elements stay in their original order relative to each other. If stability is important, then usually some variant of merge sort is used. If it's not, then some variant of quick sort is used. If the list, or sublist you're working with is small enough, insertion sort is used.
This is every company that deals with fraud of some sort. They collect evidence. Once evidence is damning enough, they ban, without giving any information. If they were to give out their evidence, then their evidence collection methods would become known and would no longer be effective.
Furthermore, even when they get it right, people who were banned correctly come on to the internet to complain.
But sometimes they get it wrong. And the only recourse seems to be a public shaming online.

Here's what I did, I put up roadblocks to mindless browsing: Use firefox nightly on android and do the hackery required to install arbitrary extensions, and install the "Request Blocker" extension. Block all browsing front pages, /r/all /r/popular /r/pics or whichever subreddit you want to block yourself from.

I always thought this was a good idea for a company. Almost all of the electricity providers in Texas all buy energy at wholesale prices and lock customers into long term contracts. If you were an electricity provider, what would be the best plan that you would want for yourself and your friends? My answer to that would be to have access to buy energy at the cheap wholesale prices for a flat monthly fee. This seems to be the griddy model and I almost switched to them.
It's a good thing that I didn't because griddy customers are the ones that got multi-thousand dollar electricity bills after the recent Texas disaster.

You're misunderstanding the argument. The argument isn't that they don't like the content. The argument is that it's a net-negative to society, and possibly an extreme-negative.

I know what you're trying to say, because at least 95% of segmentation faults are easy to fix, but I take issue with this. The hardest bug that I've ever fixed was a segmentation fault!
You've obviously never experienced random crashes where the best idea anyone has is to bisect code changes in production and see when the crashes stop.
And you've obviously never experienced random crashes on customer machines where you've tested the crashing function for weeks, poured over crash dumps and ran the exact same function with the exact same data and could never reproduce it.
The problem with this line of thinking isn't that it's wrong. I could complain about the media all day.
The problem is that main stream establishment media: NYTimes, APNews, The Guardian, Reuters, etc are the best we have.
The people that complain about the media are the people that seek out alternative media. Alternative media is infinity more misleading and misinformed.
Thomas Jefferson surely didn't mean that you should turn to alternative media like Twitter and YouTube for your news.
