Inertia, or lack of real reason to upgrade. Personally I'm still on a CPU from 2013(Intel Core i5-4570S). Havent really felt the need to upgrade. And pretty happy that I went with 16GB ram back then, since its still enough for me today(browsing/light gaming/coding). I've probably spent 10 times what that CPU cost on SSDs since then, so its not a cost issue for me. And more recently a Geforce 1070 TI. I've been thinking about upgrading, but I really need to see significant IPC lift to bother. So maybe a Zen3 or Intel next-gen sometime in 2021. If they manage to raise IPC.

I used to go for boards with a physical TPM as well(the Qxxx) and had the same driver issues you mentioned. But I've been reading recently that it might not be needed, since some of the newer intel chipsets(like z390) now have builtin Intel® Platform Trust Technology (Intel® PTT) which supposedly is a sort of firmware based TPM. I plan to give it a shot and see if it works for bitlocker hardware encryption when I buy my next motherboard.

I always carry an eastpak backpack when I bike to work. Those things are pretty much indestructible; on my second one since highschool. Then I usually shop on my way back from work. Obviously I probably have to shop more often than most people because of the limited capacity. I usually keep a spare plastic bag(that i re-use) in there as well if I need to buy more than can fit in the eastpak.
Actually sony compacts were some of the phones I was considering when I upgraded from iphone 4, to iphone SE. But the iphone se was just a tad smaller and I liked the look and feel of it. Had there been no iphone SE i would most likely be an android user now. And if apple stops producing a small model like iphone SE, that will probably be the thing that pushes me towards some sort of android phone.
I had a yubikey. It died after a few months of simply lying on the shelf behind me. No idea why, but havent exactly been a fan after that.
My guess would be a dev that knew that something was wrong with the performance of their old system, but for whatever reason it wasnt something that anyone higher up prioritized. If thats the case, I can see why one might come up with an idea of trying to solve it outside the bounds of the normal production/SQL environment. At least in my company, the only time we devs ever get to specifically look at the performance of our website is when we have "hackathon" days where we choose our own projects. I often times feel like my regular time would be much better spent trying to optimize our 2 second+ initial pageload times, instead of all the other small tasks/tweaks/bugfixes that gets sent my way. But performance is something very few people higher up seems to care about. Or maybe its a case of users and managers becoming so accustomed to something being slow they dont notice anymore.
Hopefully that limitation can be relaxed over time. Having to stuff all my logic in one big script sounds a bit annoying. At minimum having access to a second worker script route would be welcome for testing/development purposes, so one doesn't muck up a working production script.
Are there any extra costs related to outbound requests one might make from a worker?
Will every request to a worker-enabled site, pass through the worker v8 engine and charged at the going rate, even requests for static ressources like favicons, or jpgs etc? Or is there some way to limit the worker engine request matching to a specific area of your site(like /service)?
I'm running the same version of Chrome(with site isolation enabled), its reporting "Your browser is NOT VULNERABLE to Spectre" for me. Also in incognito mode with extensions disabled.
We have been using kapow robosuite for close to 10 years now. Its a commercial GUI based tool which have worked well for us, it saves us a lot of maintenance time compared to our previous hand-rolled code extraction pipeline. Only problem is that its very expensive(pricing seems catered towards very large enterprises).
So I was really hoping this this thread would have revealed some newer commercial GUI-based alternatives(on-premise, not SaaS). Because I dont really ever want to go back the maintenance hell of hand rolled robots ever again :)

With all the computing power and vision AI available in such a vehicle, it seems like it would be possible to perform an automated interior scan of the cabin after each ride. Detecting cleanliness issues(and forgotten baggage).
For me its purely a noise issue. Less heat to dissipate means less fan noise(Only speaking about home use here. In an office setting the difference would be unnoticeable).
Good that it was fixed. But now bad actors will be looking very hard for other bugs in the unsandboxed javascript interpreter. Tempting to just disable windows defender completely.
Denmark here. November 21 2014 instant clearing 365/24/7 between danish banks via the Danish Central Bank was started. I can transfer money from bank A and have it be there on my account with bank B when I alt-tab over and refresh the browser with netbank B. Oh and its free(although a few banks have started charging a minor DKK 1 or DKK 10 fee for initiating the transfer, not mine though).
Apache httpd "legacy"? Seems a bit exaggerated. As far as I can tell it works just fine, have plenty of very good tutorials(like those from digital ocean), performance wise no problems(at least for our usage). And seems simpler to setup.
At my work we use IIS for our main website, but I've been asked to setup and configure a few wordpress installations. I've played around with both nginx and apache, but it was much easier to find clear instructions to setup wordpress on apache, so thats what I went with. I also really like apaches .htaccess support. Easy to lock down access to wp-admin by just dropping a .htaccess file in there restricting access to local ip range, instead of having to pollute the nginx config file with that sort of thing.

For most sites I use keyboard shortcuts + the autocomplete in chrome. Aka to visit hackernews: Ctrl+L and then "news.y" and hit enter.
I just hope its not part of some plan to sneak in windows 10-style spyware onto older windows versions, by bundling it up with important security updates one pretty much have to install. At least the windows 10 upgrade we could say no to.
Yes. Thats why I have invested some of my money equal weighted in all three of them plus Apple. My thinking goes along the lines that I dont know the future, but I'm pretty sure at least a few of those companies will be a big part of it. They all have high aspirations and huge warchests. So if they dont make the future themselves, they can probably snap up any new promising technology.
I would upgrade, if it wasnt for the extreme disregard for user privacy in windows 10. Basically you have to go through a mile long checklist just to get to what I would consider should be the default baseline(see https://fix10.isleaked.com/). I would rather pay for a non-spyware version of their product, than be the product.
My main issue with hetzner is the lack of any sort of firewall in front of the servers. Your chosen OS is essentially directly exposed to the internet.

All the Asus products I have had have worked OK, and decent driver support.
I have on occassion bought Acer PCs for non-devs at the office, and have regretted it every time. Sure they are cheap, but they also break down very fast and/or have lousy driver support, its just not worth the hassle. I still remember the stationary Acer PC I buy for one of our salesguys. Everytime he went above 50% CPU usage it sounded like a vacuum cleaner, and could be heard from the hallways.
We have a handful of lenovo's at work(the T-series). Havent heard any complaints about them so far. And we had one very vocal dev that wouldnt use anything but lenovo :) (he had like 5 different generations of T-series and X-series). They also have some consumer series, which (according to the before mentioned vocal dev) one should avoid.
But I also see alot of people running windows on macbooks. So I guess that could work too.
We have been running solr in production for 6 years or so. But I have with interest been following the ES development blog, since I think they have a nice api/features.
The momentum/community behind elasticsearch seems to be building rapidly(to get an idea, just follow the "This week in Elasticsearch" posts on http://www.elasticsearch.org/blog).
Having said that, solr have been rock solid for us so we have no real pressing need to switch. Also we dont really have the problem(massive scaling) that elasticsearch seems to be built to handle, we just have 15 mio pageviews or so pr month. Our setup is 1 solr master, and 5 solr slaves(one on each of our 5 webservers). And do nightly dataimports from our SQL server database. That last part is indeed where I think solr currently have a nice advantage over elasticsearch. The solr dataimporthandler is really nice if your primary datastore is a SQL server, and allows you to do all sorts of nifty javascript and other transforms on the data in-flight as you stream it from your SQL server. For elastichsearch there is a jdbc-river thingy that sorta lets you do the same, but it isnt as polished or usable as the solr dataimporthandler(IMO). And if you want to install it you have to do it via a plugin link that points to a bit.ly address.. which makes me feel uneasy.
I also like that solr comes with an admin GUI out of the box. There exist some ES equivalent plugins(mobz/elasticsearch-head), but like with the jdbc river its a thirdparty plugin and I guess you have to trust that it doesnt screw with your server. With solr all you need comes with the distribution, so you dont need to spend mental energy on wether or not you can trust this or that plugin to run on your server.
Also the .NET client for ES seems very polished and more sexy than the solr equivalent.
Anyway my non-scientific gut feeling is that with the current momentum behind ES, it will over time be a better choice than solr. But unless you really need to scale massively, plain old solr is available and works just fine. And seems to me to be somewhat easier to get running than ES(but then again I'm probably biased after having run solr a long time).
I would suggest checking out the reviews on amazon before buying, even if its only 5$ :)
I dont have enough packt titles to evaluate their general quality, but at least I found their early solr books useful(it was also the only book on solr back then, so not much choice :)
I guess it depends who "we" are. The average person dont need a new computer, I agree. My mom is still using my old self-assembled desktop from 2008-ish and is perfectly happy with it.
However for those of us that use our computers 8 hours+ every day, I think it makes good sense to upgrade to the newest hardware every 2-3 years.
I just assembled a computer from new parts myself, and its nice now to have a fully encrypted workstation, with zero performance hit. Q87 motherboard with TPM(asus q87m-e) + UEFI bios + UEFI GOP Compliant videocard(EVGA GeForce GTX 770) + M500 SSD + Bitlocker + Win2012R2(or Win8.1) means you can enable the builtin hardware encryption of the M500 SSDs. It gives me a certain peace of mind to know that a burglar wont be able to grab my personal files and source code if my computer was ever stolen. I also imagine the TPM+Secure boot combo will make it harder for a rootkit to go unnoticed.
Not to mention the lower idle power usage resulting from the 22nm haswell and 32nm lynx chipset.
My friends at work seems to think I'm crazy for replacing a 2 year old computer :) Although as I pointed out to one of them, he spent more than twice as much on a new mountain bike, and I'm sure i spend alot more time on my computer than he does on his mountain bike ;)
