oh very exciting! Thanks for sharing these sjs382! A bummer the models can't be run on both the GPUs and CPU so you could run much larger models. A year ago I was running gpt120b as it easily fit in 128gb ram. But now I'm only running gemma 26b and wishing I had stuck with 64gb ram since 128gb gets throttled. Not regretting buying 128gb 1.5 years ago though!

I love the X3, light enough I can carry it around without noticing it. Battery lasts forever. I don't feel the need for a backlight at all, I love how simple this is.

I know people favor the X4 for the usb-c, and I'm all for universal charging cables. But in my experience the usb port is often the first component to fail in something like this. And that seems super annoying to replace. The pogo pins on the other hand are unlikely to fail. And the cable is not proprietary, you can get compatible cables on Amazon/etc.

it's such a subtle joke as _parts_ of this sound genuinely helpful. But of course not having any terminal access and a read-only fallback are the haha parts I guess.

this just speaks to the importance of detailed prompting. When would you ever just say "no"? You need to say what to do instead. A human intern might also misinterpret a txt that just reads 'no'.

there’s a lot to unpack here. Makes me think of the This Is Fine meme. People know the room is burning around them but they just don’t have enough bandwidth to address it.

huh, I wonder if he has relayed this story multiple times, I’m only familiar with this version, https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/12020560-talking-about-when...

“(talking about when he tells his wife he’s going out to buy an envelope) Oh, she says well, you’re not a poor man. You know, why don’t you go online and buy a hundred envelopes and put them in the closet? And so I pretend not to hear her. And go out to get an envelope because I’m going to have a hell of a good time in the process of buying one envelope. I meet a lot of people. And, see some great looking babes. And a fire engine goes by. And I give them the thumbs up. And, and ask a woman what kind of dog that is. And, and I don’t know. The moral of the story is, is we’re here on Earth to fart around. And, of course, the computers will do us out of that. And, what the computer people don’t realize, or they don’t care, is we’re dancing animals.”

― Kurt Vonnegut

Curious they say in the first paragraph, "didn’t speak the language" but then seemingly very quickly started attending board meetings and taking notes? With no further mention of learning Danish. Seems like a notable achievement!

yeah I also have a gallery of 'bad art', in my home entryway. I have about 25 pieces I've collected from the side of the road when students move out. Mostly half-finished canvases, portraits of beer cans.

Galois Theory 2 years ago

Danny O’Brien’s blog post A Touch of the Galois is my favorite writing on Galois,

Flunked two colleges, fought to restore the Republic, imprisoned in the Bastille, and managed to scribble down the thoughts that would lead to several major fields of mathematics, before dying in a duel — either romantic or political — at the age of twenty.

In my mind the best social network would limit people to 1 post per week (or month?). Then no one is creating more noise than anyone else, you get to what's really important, and you can actually catch up with everyone.
