This complexity must be job security for somebody. Maybe multiple somebodies.

This. The 90 day certs of LE are terrible (I hit 1-2 sites a week broken b/c of expired LE certs) and unnecessary, and all part of a bigger trend by big business to control more of the web. LE could be a voice for the user, but the "non-profit" pays their team ~$250K/year so they tread carefully about doing things in the average user's interests.

There are shockingly few images of mitochondria available online.

I started a project to increase that number by 1,000,000x: https://powerhouse.breckyunits.com/

I'm currently mastering the same confocal fluorescence technique used in this image (but borrowing microscope time, as the scope costs >$250K), but also developing an at-home protocol using Janus Green that should cost less than $200.

ChatGPT Search 2 years ago

This is such a good rant, and I think you should develop it into an essay and I think there is an important catchy natural equation to mine here.

ChatGPT Search 2 years ago

Why would they ever want to sell ads?

They did not get addicted to selling ads, have billions in revenue from paying subscribers, and don't have to wean themselves off of ads (as Google and Meta would love to do).

ChatGPT Search 2 years ago

If they are making billions from subscriptions, why on earth would they want to switch to an ads business?

· Revenue was $65.6 billion and increased 16%

· Operating income was $30.6 billion and increased 14%

· Net income was $24.7 billion and increased 11%

Impressive

much like other "chemical imbalances" such as ADHD or depression

Interesting that the examples you bring up are also things that turned out to be misunderstood and were not actually chemical imbalances.

you appear to assume

Where do I appear to assume this?

Let's take a conservative estimate of 200MB/s write speed on a Digital Ocean Droplet.

If your site is 100MB, write the new site to disk and read it into memory, kill the old server and bind to port on new server, in 1 second.

So long WordPress 2 years ago

I'd like to take this chance to plug my new startup, the Printing Press.

It's like WordPress, but instead of digital, it's physical.

It requires no servers or computers at all.

Just paper, which you can make from naturally growing trees, and ink (I'm not sure how that is made).

Your blog will last a long time, like hundreds of years.

You can read it while sitting over your poo hole.

Visit our worksite and check it out.

People want to spend less time plugged into screens, not less.

Yes. I threw my phone away 2.5 years ago (after my 3yo daughter kept saying "no phone dadda") and it has made my life significantly better. Like living in the 1990's again.

In a land of the distracted, the phoneless man is king.

That being said, I think the AVP is very cool technology, and will have important applications in the years ahead. (Just not mass market for a long time, if ever)

I love this.

Not the implementation, I think one could do better, but the fact that they identified an interesting opportunity: coming up with the Ultimate Conditional Syntax for pattern matching.

I would love to see them take one more crack at it, and this time try to think about how to reduce the syntax to the bare minimum.

Here's my read/adding of this language to PLDB: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzsDaq0UdnM
