Can you explain this a bit further? I'm not a fan of Mitt Romney, but I've never understood the outrage at his tax returns. It was my understanding that the low tax rate was due to 1) donations and 2) the fact that most of his income comes from capital gains. Do you think people considering running for president should go out of their way to pay more taxes?

Nexus 5 13 years ago

Can someone explain why Motorola Mobility wouldn't take over manufacturing Nexus devices?

Oh man. I seriously love you. I've been trying to find a fix for this for about two years now.

My app sometimes launches from the background after the user enters or leaves a region. It looks for a session token (not a password) in the Keychain and would return nil and log the user out. I'm not sure how I never came across kSecAttrAccessibleAlwaysThisDeviceOnly in all my hours trying to find a solution.

By the way, this isn't specific to iOS 7. I've had the same issue since iOS 5.

Why is it absurd? The former is completely based on a combination of income and lifestyle, so I can't argue with that.

However, the latter is just math. According to the article, if you save 50% and maintain your current lifestyle, assuming a 4% withdrawal rate, you'll be financially independent.

Funny, I owned this domain until July of this year and was planning to build the exact same thing. I was in my "have an idea, get excited, buy the domain, do nothing, let it expire" phase.

Glad to see you picked it up and actually built and launched.

These apps are great. Does anyone know how they plan to make money in the future? Just start charging for the apps once they're ranked #1 in each city?

The author actually agrees with you to a certain extent: "Well, it is a big deal. And in spite of how effortless these accomplishments may appear, people work harder than you likely realize to make these things happen." He or she isn't denying that there's an element of self-discipline and pain in achieving your goals, actually the opposite.

I think the author is asking us to take a step back and really consider why we have these aspirations. Is it only for status? If so, we're already at a disadvantage because there are people out there who enjoy the grind for that goal more than us.

For me, the trick is finding the goal that has the highest ROI and the least grind/friction. There is always going to be a certain amount of pain and discomfort in pursuing any goal, but it doesn't hurt to try to minimize it.

I don't believe that's true. I see a "Deactivate" button in my settings. Or is that not the same thing as "deleting"?

Yes, but the default is on. I didn't know that until I saw this post 5 minutes ago. Now I'm thinking of deactivating my Quora account.

Using his language, I think he'd say you "don't care about" figuring out the intricacies of e-mail deliverability. It seems like "don't care" was just a poor choice of wording. A better metric would be just to ask what your core competency is, which is the actual content of the newsletter, not the technology involved with running a newsletter.

I wrestled with the ETF vs. Index mutual fund debate too, but I realized that pretty much each Vanguard ETF has an index fund equivalent with the same expense ratio if you invest at least $10,000 to get Admiral Shares. For example, VFINX: https://personal.vanguard.com/us/FundsSnapshot?FundId=0040&#....

At this point, there are only two differences between the two: 1) You can't day trade index funds 2) You can't auto invest in ETFs

Auto investing was really important to me for dollar cost averaging, so I decided to go with index funds rather than ETFs in the end.

By the way, Vanguard does have index funds for REITs: https://personal.vanguard.com/us/funds/snapshot?FundId=0123&...

Reading that was pretty eery since I just ate a banana, got a glass of water from the kitchen, have Chrome open with 20 tabs (including, obviously, Hacker News) and have a Pomodoro Android app within reach. The only thing that snapped me out of it was that my app was free.

I was also wondering why he or she was reluctant to do this. Maybe the decks are already printed? If not, I don't think toning down the name and the marketing would take too much from the essence of the product.

"a health problem is also a potentially catastrophic financial problem", which is why this guy should probably stop focusing on his sleep schedule and do everything he can to get some coverage (probably easier said than done; I've never been in this position). A perfect sleep schedule won't help much if he steps out of his apartment and gets hit by a car.

Though the reasons he recommends emulating a role model aren't that obvious. It's a hack to beat procrastination by making you more confident in your plan. Since the same plan was used successfully by someone else, you're more likely to stick with it. It seems like the quality of the plan isn't what matters, but that it actually worked at least once. A plan you've come up with on your own is unproven, so is more susceptible to procrastination.
