I say this as someone who is buying an Ariel Atom this weekend. I'm an enthusiast as much as anyone. Acting as if Asian (viet) Americans in SoCal were the only fucking people into Japanese cars is insanely retarded.

Nearly no one in tech or on HN is viet compared to the massive Chinese population in SV - so why is this even getting traction here?

There are wide ranges but it's more about how you feel personally and what you've noticed over time. Some men have below average T but feel great and build serious muscle anyway.

The two sigma range is something like 300-900 with std being 150 and median 600. This is for what is labeled as healthy 18-39 men. It doesn't include obese men.

If you want to take something away from it, just get yourself measured a few times over a few years. Then later if you have issues that relate to low T or whatever you can flag it with your doctor. In my case, it was super important because I found out I am in the top 0.01% of (healthy) total T producers. If I had "low T" type symptoms and went to my doctor without that information - they'd be like, "no, your T is amazing actually."

Everyone has a different baseline. I only wish I started measuring before I was in my mid-30s because I feel my levels before were even more ridiculous.

YMMV here. Your electric rates are insanely cheap and places where EVs are most popular are in states like California where paying $0.50/kwh is not uncommon. Plus many of us in CA can't even install solar to offset any of it.

It's $20 for 75 minutes in California. Add on that you'll spend an extra hour at the store minimum just trying to get the truck and return it. I would use the service way more and buy more from Home Depot but they have the worst customer service out of any retail I've ever been in.

It’s always been this way - people just don’t realize it.

Before, people were reposting memes, articles, chain letters, etc. Most of the content you’d see wasn’t created by the person you are friends with.

This isn’t really new. And as someone who makes original content and posts it regularly - people do enjoy original stuff from their friends. It’s just that it’s hard for people to do. Most people are very insecure, have little original thought, and/or the interest in sharing anything they think to a broader audience than 2-3 close friends. I buck the trend here.

I don't think your examples are even remotely scalable nor do they pay well. Joining a startup at an early stage where you know a founder and can bypass interview steps is notoriously low compensation.

Acquisition based hiring isn't a real methodology. That's being a founder of a very successful startup and getting acquired. That's like saying "want a new job? Get your company acquired by a new one."

That’s a system design interview. Those exist already and are about 45 minutes in length.

You must not live in California. A lot of these are actually regulated by the state.

You’re also in a particular club. I’ve met a lot of supercar owners just in the wild and at my work. A lot of them are into it for the status. Some can be passionate but very few will ever drive them that hard.

I’ve known a lot of people with supercars. Quite a few want the attention. If they didn’t - they would drive a different car. Very few are getting them for performance reasons. If they just wanted a performance car then they’d probably just get an open wheel.

This is large ymmv. Most people would get fired for not shipping stuff regularly. Just because some engineers at a big company are able to skirt by without shipping doesn’t mean that’s the norm.

The company has tens of thousands of people. There will be some variation but a lot of orgs are quite ruthless with their metrics.

No one is getting $700k tc for senior eng outside of speciality AI roles. That’s beyond even staff level.

You can stay at the company and get stock appreciation up to that but you’re not getting a new hire offer at $700k below staff level. (Even for staff, it’s high)

I presume they’ll do something more akin to coffee meets bagel where you have X amount of people per day to choose to interact with. There’s not really much AI in all that. That’s been around for a decade+.

Hinge is the behemoth and it’s practically how everyone in the UMC and in rich cities meets now after college. It’s unsettling how few serious relationships I meet have been made in some other way (or even a different app) in recent years. Again, college is the big one but if you’re single after college then it seems you’re going to have to meet through Hinge. It’s hard to meet anyone who is serious in any other way.

Relationship pairing is overall down across the board though. Looksism is at its all time high and I think will continue to be even more dominant than it already has. I’ve seen the culture shift quite drastically over the last ten years. The idea of dating someone for their personality and completely ignoring their looks is well dead and gone at this point. No one even trying to keep up the facade that most everything in your dating prospects is dictated by your superficial traits.

HN’s demo is quite old. It’s likely most here are married with kids or have a dead mother.

Yeah, this is my current read on the market. If you're looking for typical $400k senior software eng role at a public tech company - you're going to be having a really hard time. Meta closed many roles and is laying off 8000. The rest of the public tech market seems to be following similar.

If you're looking at 200k/yr roles in SF that are in person and looking closer to 996 than not - plenty seem to be hiring and trying to recruit. Downside? You have to be in SF 6 days/week and it's shit pay for the region. (You will likely have to do roommates because $200k/yr is borderline for a decent apartment in SF now due to 20% yoy price hikes)

Up $50B in revenue - spend $100B+ on AI. Not sure that's the move but what do I know.

It’s a generous severance but in this economy where most of big tech is actively downsizing, companies aren’t going public, cost of housing (or much of anything really) isn’t going down, and the only thing hiring are in-person 996 AI startups that don’t pay enough… It’s a bad time to be in tech.

It’s basically impossible to afford a normal middle class lifestyle (including owning a home, no super commutes, etc.) living in these tech centers (where the few jobs are) on single income.

Everyone here is slightly wrong.

Meta does require you to have a Facebook account. The expectation is that it is your personal fb that you use regularly. However, it doesn’t need to be. You can create a new fb account with a new gmail account and that’s fine. That’s what I did and some others do as well.

That said, 90%+ of employees end up using their real personal account because the language they use makes it seem like you couldn’t do what I described.

Or stuck with HCOL that is the Bay Area. There’s not really any purely “ethical” companies in the Bay Area that pay enough for you to live there.

You’d be surprised how few people actually buy into the corporate culture at these companies. It’s just to get paid because everyone needs a job to pay their expenses.

You want to solve this then lower the cost of housing.
