I've lived 40+ years in several places in the northern US, mostly in rural areas and this isn't my experience at all.

Having wasted 6 years of my life intensively working to create an algorithmic trading system (and failing to make it consistently profitable), what they have here is the easy part. You need a system for discovering strategies. That's were almost all your effort will go. The simulator for backtesting, integrating with a broker, etc. is such a small part of it, if you're serious about it, you're probably better off writing your own.

I still regret missing Michael Scott's 05-05-05 party. It only happens once every billion years.

I don't know what I'm missing, but I've tried to use Time Machine many times over the past decade and every time it's the same thing. After a few weeks, it forgets what it's doing and has to rebuild the backup from scratch.

If you keep prying after "I'm fine... leave me alone" then you'll quickly become the reason for them going from "fine" to "not fine".

As a former TSA agent, it's most definitely theater. We used to practice by trying to hide something and see if we could get through. The xray operator didn't stand a chance even when they knew it was coming. This was over 10 years ago so maybe it's improved? I doubt it.

Well sure, if you're writing a generic CSV parser, it's very complicated. But if you know what your input looks like, CSV can be one of the simplest format to parse.

I think the analogy to energy is pretty good. Like the FizzBuzz thing, you can also build a machine that has a lot of energy but doesn't accomplish anything useful.

Agree, I love the idea and wanted to make this work for my home, but from personal experience I'd say most people would find this more trouble than it's worth.

I wrote something very similar to this a couple years ago for our household. It runs on a raspberry pi and uses a barcode scanner and when we go shopping we scan everything in and then scan things out as we use them. We live far away from town and shopping trips are rare, big all day events. It's easy to forget to scan things out and then things that don't have barcodes like vegetables are hard to track so we don't bother. Manually entering it all in and then remembering to remove it while cooking is too much trouble (we tried).

I agree that having a routine is important. But I think what makes the routine is up to the individual, clothes may be important for some, but not for others.

There are a lot of porn friendly payment systems. The big issue is chargebacks and fraud.

I've been using both lately. VSCode for when I'm working on a project and the editor ends up staying open all day. I also often have to work with large files, so I use Sublime to pop them open and make a quick change.

I like that attitude very much and I think it can be extended to everyone. As someone who's straddling the line between developer and manager I've sometime found that difficult but try to be as supportive as possible. The project managers where I work all seem to think developers are children that need a babysitter. The lack of respect is infuriating.

It's been nearly a decade since I worked for the TSA, but back then the procedure was: 1) Put the bag through the CT scanner 2) If it beeps, open the bag and find the offending object and make sure it's not an explosive or whatever. 3) Try to put the bag back together the way you found it as best you can 4) Leave that note that says you were in the bag 5) Send it on it's way

I suspect it probably hasn't changed much.

It's never too late. I was a D student through most of high school, just barely graduated. I didn't care. Drank through three different colleges without getting a degree and spent most of my twenties bumming around. It wasn't until I was nearly 30 that I started getting my life together. I'm 38 now and feel quite successful and happy with where I'm at in life. I'm sure from my parent perspective, I was pretty hopeless.

I really really want to love this editor, it's beautiful, but it burns me every time I use it and I end up going back to sublime text. Slow, buggy, hangs, 100% cpu usage, huge amounts of memory usage...

The language wars get exhausting. Several years ago Ruby was the coolest thing ever, now I guess people think it's just boring. Also, PHP got really unpopular and all you heard about was how it would kill your dog and sacrifice it to satan. Now days it's still cool to look down on those who use it, but you shouldn't talk about it. Don't know know all "real" devs program in Python? Go was short lived, a year or two ago it was the greatest thing ever and now all you hear about is how much it sucks. The latest trendy thing is Rust. Rust is our new savior. I wonder how long that will last before something else comes along as the coolest thing ever. Maybe Brainfuck for it's simple syntax?

Good point. I don't understand it very well, and haven't really spent a lot of time trying. When I need to get something going, I have the option of doing IPv4 only and being confident I've done it well. Or, also include a half-baked IPv6 solution that I don't fully understand and could have security holes and other problems. Since there's very little consequence for not implementing IPv6, it's hard to justify take that risk.

I agree with you that the TSA is a joke, but as someone who worked as a TSA agent before, I never stole anything, nor to the best of my knowledge did anyone I worked with steal anything. Stealing, in fact, would be kind of difficult, even in the baggage rooms. I think "a major source of income for TSA employees" is a pretty gross exaggeration of the truth. For the most part, TSA employees are just a bunch of regular people trying to make a living, just like everyone else.

Wow, that's awesome! My wife and I just recently did the same thing. We are 3 months in and really loving it. Currently in Carson City, NV.

I probably have an unpopular opinion on this, but I feel that people who wish to commit suicide should not be prevented from doing so. By all means, if someone wants to get help or needs counseling they should be able to get it. But if in the end their choice is suicide, we should be making it easier for them, not harder. I think that if I ever wanted to commit suicide I would be less likely to seek counseling out of fear I would be "prevented" from making my own choices. Similarly, when an animal is critically injured we "put them out of their misery" because that's the "humane" thing to do. But us humans, we have to suffer to the very end. Why?

It's kind of sad that this project has become so dead that an update to a dev build is news worthy.

Some of the best developers I've hired don't have a degree. When looking at resumes, I don't really care about their academics.
