Social Commerce And The New Rules For Local Businesses

Hey Hacker News! Myself and three others are on the SecretSet team, let me know if you have any questions about our process and specifically things we did to get it built and off the ground. Hope you liked the read!

Build and ship code. Get feedback, build and ship code. Rinse and repeat until something sticks.

Any time spent reviewing your idea and building even a one page "Business Model Canvas" is time wasted. Most likely the idea you initially had will not be the one that ends up working out for yea.

I feel like this article is a list of best practices for pretending to be an entrepreneur.

I like this as an alternative, "You've got an idea for a startup, now what? JUST DO IT!"

This is something I have been waiting for! Simple and actually useful. I was skeptical at first, but being able to build a list then later listen to the song is great!

Besides cleaning up the site and making it look pretty, the MVP is very well executed. What are your plans for monetization?

Also any thoughts on building in a playlist feature to run through my entire list of songs? How about sending songs to my contacts to-do list?

Good job though!

Good point for startups who have value to offer day one, but some startups do not add value until a certain level of activity is reached or a certain state of stability is reached, take Twitter for example.

However, I believe they have reached a point that it should start to charge. Those who see it as a value have spoken up about wanting and willing to pay.

Being a biz founder I picked up technical skills and built a crappy (MVP of MVP's) prototype to pitch to tech founders. If the non-tech founder can't even learn enough code to get anything built then I would be concerned for their level of dedication for their own idea.

Even though my prototype was terrible and even made the other founders laugh, they could see my level of dedication and my ability to get something done.

To me being a biz founder we need to be the scapegoat of the startup, no pride all humility and can sell the shit out of anything.

We can all pull the "Mark never walked in our shoes" line, but what he is trying to say is that transparency is inevitable as we march forward into the information age. So we might as well accept our convictions and live with them.

As for the people in Egypt there will always be outlets for anonymous communication. However, it won't be found on some tech blog.

Putting faces behind the comments provoke people to consider their opinions more carefully, just like we do in real life. And if you are one of those people who want to lash out, but don't have the guts to do it in face then you should just tell your best friend or keep it to yourself.

Just my thoughts.

This is why YC looks at the team dynamic and the individuals to determine which teams to fund and help. All good ideas are worthless without proper execution and superior knowledge in the subject matter.

If you carry this logic over it could help entrepreneurs choose which idea they should focus on first. The assumption is which ever one could fail faster, but have that greater up side reward should be done first.

Don't just choose an idea based on it's chances of success. Choose an idea that maximizes success vs. payout over time.

The micro graph was not designed to be an exact science to the phenomena that occurs with group-buying. It was added to give the reader a visual representation of my overall argument towards Groupon.

There are no data points, it is merely a tool to show what I was saying.

I understand they have more visibility in an other wise hidden market.

However, short term advertising and pricing only moves you on the same demand curve. Unless you end up converting those discount buyers.

I think Groupon is a great way to get your business known, just don't put your eggs in one basket is all I am saying.
