I would think working for 37 signals alone would be a big enough evidence of how awesome you are. Also the kind of company that is looking at your "progression" probably isn't the place to go.

It would be interesting if all major websites had this sort of alert system. They already know about where you are and as less and less people watch regular broadcast television it isn't always obvious what is going on with regards to weather. Here in the Midwest it would be pretty great to be able to see that there was a tornado warning or something in my area. In this example it could provide specific information for the particular area.

Are there any YC companies that aren't based on the West Coast?

I think it is great that they have picked a fight with a competitor.

Great article. It is easy to get caught up in the chasing the best presentation, but if you don't have a great product and the information to support it no one will listen.

It would appear so. Our Prime account was started by my wife and it is shared with my amazon account, and I am able to watch Amazon Prime videos.

I am not suggesting they don't take a cut, but when running the financials for the startup I am working on, 30 percent of every item is a huge chunk.

I find this absolutely insane. Apple is acting as a payment processor that is charging 30%. I thoroughly enjoy Apple's product, but taking 30 percent of in-app purchases seems crazy.

I switched from the pain of developing Ruby on windows to a 13inch Macbook air with 4Gb of ram and am loving it. I do ruby and mobile development on the machine and couldn't be happier.

My co-founder and I have been planning on applying since we started working on our prototype. The announcement of the 150K definitely helped my wife rest easier about the decision. Either way we want to do YC not for the money, but for the mentorship and growth that is difficult to attain here in the Midwest.

This looks like a great tool for starting up a project. It would be nice to have it run the same thing again without going through all of the menus.

It would be great to see programs like this across the country.

The movie theater is fighting a battle with home and currently 3D is their answer. Is it the best answer? Most films who use 3D these days add it on later and it is done pretty poorly. I find it an interesting proposal, something should be done to continue making going to the cinema an experience.

I just bought the 13 inch Macbook Air and love it. I do Rails and mobile development on it and have no issues. I would think that many overestimate their needs. For me the portability combined with the speed makes the 13inch MBA amazing. I would be interested possibly in a 15inch, but only if it came with more speed or battery life.

The problem for me is that e-books cost the same as paperbacks. And personally I like to have a copy to share. With the ability to share and lend books alleviates some of this issue. But I still think the publishers are holding it back.

It was cool to see them go about challenging the status quo. It is difficult starting something that goes against the established guard, but it provides hope for future startup founders wanting to revolutionize an industry.

This is an interesting dilemma that I think alot of startups come to. Interesting that Meetup is still around after making the switch to premium. Could the same be done with other free services?

Microsoft is the development platform of choice for big business. The hottest startup to use their stack in recent memory is StackOverflow. Generally speaking hackers choose not to use Microsoft's platform when they have a choice. Personally I use c# at my day job, but I barely considered building something for the WP7, and am instead working on iPhone and Android.

Some would, but most people would continue to use a free service. It would have to seriously be causing the average user a pain to have them switch. More likely would be another free service that could be the gmail of years past and they would slowly become what gmail is today.

Microsoft can't build the kind of developer community that Google and Apple have. The interface is smooth, and the Zune Pass is great, but there has to be more.

I would think you don't need a great idea to have a great company, but you need an idea that is worth something.

I used it for a couple of days, then switched back to TextMate. I am going to watch the PeepCode Vim series (http://peepcode.com/products/smash-into-vim-i) and I think that will give me some momentum.

I use TextMate, but have been trying to make the switch to vim.
