Both are real. I worked in the public sector and only worked from home for a month. My wife works in winemaking and never took any time off work. Both of us due to our jobs were outside all the time. I got covid, and developed systemic inflammation affecting most body functions as well as symptoms consistent with Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome. The changes to my memory, cognition, mood stability and personality were frightening. While driving home at the onset of symptoms I had a crippling headache, 150+ bpm heart rate, chest pain, and limb numbness. In the 30 minutes between leaving work and arriving home my handwriting completely changed, and my ability compose communication dropped from consulting on peer-reviewed technical papers to junior high at best. There is no doubt in my mind the effects of lockdown were immense and caused widespread intra- and inter-personal issues we haven’t come close to recovering from. But the physiological damage covid possesses the capacity to unleash on those as unfortunate as I was are equally real as well

Precisely what happened to me. Doctor botched the disgnosis, my department in local government did everything in their power to push me out immediately upon sharing an honest assesment of how I was feeling, asserting that I was voluntarily resigning rather than genuinely ill - which came across as retaliation for some of them having to return to the office in my stead, as prior to catching covid-19 and suffering the above effects I had been the sole volunteer to work from the office and liase with the public on everyone elses behalf. I hope you’re correct but the very realistic possibility of SPO (single Pilot Operations) is what pushed myself - and many others like me - away from the career. The current pilot shortage was by design, as the airlines were well aware of the issue and had many ways to avoid it. I’m still of the mind the current shortage (and short term plans to mitigate it) are just to hold them over long enough to end the current 2-pilot system and bring the standard to single pilot operations

The fact that our existing computational models are in agreement with the experimental behavior leads me to believe there is no new physics involved here. That being said this raises the question as to whether this class of material is known and characterized within our national research labs but has been kept classified, and if it was unknown it raises the question of why experimentation is what discovered it and why weren't we able to harness the computational model to identify it theoretically and develop a method to produce it practically prior to this. My money says there are people in this world who have long been aware of this, and its either already in use in a classified manner or it's interesting but there are other materials which are more practical in all use cases.

More than likely there is only one interesting material in this specific composition. But understanding the phenomenon we are observing in this material can potentially lead to the development of other materials which display these characteristics, and tune those to function in this way at specific temperature/pressure situations. If we develop efficient ways to produce these materials in bulk (which is orders of magnitude more complicated than just characterizing what we see here) it would be unimaginably revolutionary. But the energy required to do this at scale will likely require our civilization to utilize orders of magnitude more energy, so if this is practical for our daily lives on a wide scale I believe it's development will be contingent on harnessing fusion. Otherwise it will be limited to only the most extreme use cases in the way superconductors are currently used now.

Observed effects which have been given a name != a single universal truth. Just because we have experimental evidence of effects and theoretical explanations for their occurrence prove we actually have defined the underlying phenomenon's which produce the observed effect accurately. The reason we experiment isn't to prove our theories are correct so much as it is to probe where they break down so we can further refine our understanding of the universe. What we are likely seeing here is the result of an organized pattern of atomic nucleii forming a lattice which creates the conditions for the movement of electrons to be easier (or harder) than expected at certain temperatures (with temperature being the property which induces strain on the lattice). When all this started going down I bought industrial engineering technologies I wanted to teach myself to use better - and got to work doing useful things with them. I'm unsurprised that these tools keep climbing in value. I feel like we are entering a world thats going to separate those who use technology to their advantage and those who are just being used by it - and it does not look good for the latter.

Litigation is the enemy here. I’ve been in this from top to bottom and it’s always legal precedents that fuck everything up. Governing bodies, be they local or regulatory, are forced to broadly interpret legal precedent established in high profile situations, or small, specific legal settlements which have occurred at a local level. Lawyers then take this case law and work with bureaucrats to craft regulations and ordinances which have zero possibility of running afoul the case law, and these can become so odd and counterintuitive when broadly applied that they have wildly negative effects on the whole. A high dollar project can spend the money the develop legal justifications for getting a code variance and ignoring the precedent set by case law, but the 95% of the rest of us are forced to design, construct, and accept the baked in laws to gain the privledge from the city to operate under their purview (which ultimately puts them on the hook for any lawsuit in their jurisdiction - as they always come after cities before individuals, and the cost of fighting these always exceeds the cost of settling them). So contractors are left constructing shit they know won’t work, engineers are signing off on shit they know won’t work, and cities are authorizing construction on shit they know won’t work, all to avoid taking on the responsibility doing your job right, and to avoid the horrendous consequences that would result from the people willing to go along with this system being in the position of making actual design decisions themselves, with no legal safety nets when they fuck up. It is the very definition of a broken, unsustainable system, and there are even more levels of red tape around environmental reviews I didn’t come close to getting into. It’s a lawyers dream, the most profitable contractor in your local jurisdiction is so solely because they are the best at exploiting loopholes in the system to overbill clients, it drives away anyone who has the skill or desire to fix it, and its and civilizations worst enemy.

Just one person but i was an early case (family member went to Wuhan 1-2 times each month. During the firsr year of COVID, as early as march of 2020, i had serious issues with gut and hearth inflamation - repeated bouts that started as back pain, became chest pain, elevated heart-rate to 150 for ~3 days at a time, 24 hours a day. Gradyally the episodes became less frequent leading up to a stroke type event co current with a presumed second bout of covid. Was forced back to work about a week after the issue, and the only other coworker who was near me contracted covid about 10 days later.

Following the Stroke type event I lost virtually all of my talent at writing, And ultimately my job, which was very humbling. Ive spent the past year working gig jobs when i can, and fortunately all long covid symptoms have gone away. I feel like my brain is close to 100% but i lack the confidence in myself, my memory, and my writing and am constantly second guessing myself and assume im wrong if in a contested discussion. It really sucks, yet im probably one of the lucky ones
