I have been coding for over 20 years now, and I feel it is rinse and repeat in terms of hitting a roadblock, and finding the answer. Also, a lottttttt of patience. You might take two hours to figure out something that ends up being really trivial, and then you have that moment of feeling good that you solved it, and then you are right back into the next hurdle.

Yes, the 'global warming' piece is almost comical in that almost every person in Silicon Valley and Los Angeles, year in year out buy the latest iPhone and every tech gadget imaginable. The carbon footprints of these are huge. To then have the argument that we need to do something about climate change is so hypocritical. Just do proper forest management and keep the climate change for a different topic is my opinion on it. Because, if people really cared about global warming by lowering their usage of things, this is the wrong state to ever even come close to doing it.

Does anyone who is bi-polar feel that they are able to navigate their down time well enough that it is not crippling? For myself, I believe it was more inline with seasonal depression, and after 30+ years of living in the northeast, where winters are longgggg and exgtremely cold, I moved to a place that this wasn't the case. I don't know if I have it, but when I am feeling down, I tend to read more, and just try to focus on the fact that I will come out of it and feel better shortly.

That is sad to hear. By any chance do you live with others. I thankfully have my wife and two kids which helped, though I just moved from LA to SC, because it was so draconian. We have already talked to more neighbors in 5 days living here than we did in years living in LA. I recently got the outdoor Polk audio speakers. And have them hard-wired to a fairly high-end receiver. The sound quality is so much better. I listen to a lot of vinyl, so that makes it an easier choice too. We use the smaller WonderBoom speaker when we do need it for the beach or something, but when at home, I will always chose to get the hard-wired path. Regardless how quickly the Sonos speakers connect to your source, hard-wired is better quality and is always connected.

I was paying $70-80 to fill my tank of gas in CA, and now am paying $35 in SC. I took my son for sushi the other night, and we feasted and I had two glasses of wine, and the bill was $50 instead of at least $100 in LA, so yea, everything is way cheaper when you aren't paying to live in the "dream" world of LA.

Yea, I mean, handling scale is such a specific issue and everyone worries about it too much. At this point, you just use DynamoDB or some other managed service, and let the teams with 1000's of developers worry about scale.

I am waiting my required 30 days to actually be allowed to delete facebook. Which is pretty crazy, that they won't even truly delete your stuff until then. Though I am sure, they are leaving all my eccentricities on many of their servers regardless of my insistence on deleting the account.

There is still great software being made. I would say that the interface in a Tesla is pretty great. There is just more software out there now, so the number of bad pieces of software are magnified that much more. But, I think great software is dependent on how willing the developers are in making it great. Yes they need support from management etc., but there is tons of great software out there, it is just that there is more and more mediocre and bad software being made as well.

Yea, we did stand-ups Mon, Wed, Fri, which tended to be a good balance. Still able to let people know what you are doing, but not having to be forced to do it everyday as if you are children.

I agree that unit tests become the end all be all for many developers. For web development, I have gotten into a good pattern, where we have some reasonable unit tests. Then on the api, we have Postman tests that run on CI using the Neuman npm. Then for e2e tests, we use GhostInspector, which can also run in your ci pipeline. We do two sets of tests in Ghost, a set that are pretty happy path, and then some really complex ones that run between different sites etc. The first set run during CI, and if they break, then the build is broken. The others, we don't cause the build to break, as they are a bit more brittle.

But we have to use kubernetes. Jk. But yea, especially if your startup is not really high-tech, but merely a good business that needs tech.
