This seems like a silly solution to a silly problem. If you're tracking your employees' performance based on actual business metrics, who cares how many times their mouse jiggles in a given day?

Until this moment I had no earthly idea you could join a Zoom call from a browser. Good on them for their evil genius design team :-p

It's amazing that this solution has not been considered more openly and widely until now. It's cheaper, more effective, and doesn't require draconian regulations or near-impossible expectations on human behavior.

It's also something that could be tested for a year. It's not irreversible. It would allow the undeveloped world a chance to achieve a piece of the global wealth pie.

I assumed OP was talking about seeing crimes as a percentage of crime opportunities, whereas overall crime counts on a per capita basis might mask that people spend less time outdoors because of the risk of crime.

Opening a new browser tab and forgetting what I was going to do in that tab is a very frequent phenomenon for me.

Brilliant early work from Bourdain that (I believe) launched his career, which was tragically cut short. Just last month, I feasted on bun cha next to the table in Hanoi where Obama and Bourdain ate in 2015. He was a global ambassador who united the world through our universal love of food, and really had an amazing impact bringing attention to all cultures and traditions.

It's also important to learn from Bourdain's life that even if someone's life looks perfect from the outside, you never know what people are going through. Everyone deserves empathy. And please, if you are suffering, remember that you are not alone and there are people who can help.

By comparison, what % of humanities majors are working in humanities-related jobs? That would seem to be an important comparator that is excluded.

Airbus can outsource to US firms as well as Boeing can. Boeing and its shareholders deserve to lose business and market share.

The junk fee legislation seems like a great way to make companies waste millions of dollars in resources rebuilding their backend systems just to result in the exact same fees being rolled into the remaining SKUs or charged to more customers than necessary.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence (which I did look for in the body of the article; didn't find). Without supporting sweeping statements like this with actual, verifiable evidence, this is simply not a serious article meant to be read seriously by serious people.

That was my learning too. Went viral for a side project I did on my couch in 5 hours when I was bored.

It was almost a decade ago, and the experiment lasted a week, and I earned $20 total...so I assume everyone has let it go at this point ;)

I can speak to this! I was "canceled" in 2014...before it was cool...for doing exactly this[0]

A couple reasons restaurants don't do this:

1) Loss of quality control over customer experience. For example they provide a $100 dinner, but the client expects a $200 dinner. That creates bad experience

2) Desire to maintain accessibility on price point (same reasons artists don't charge more for tickets) and perceived inequities of charging extra for reservations

3) Rewarding loyal customers who value the food / brand / hospitality rather than the highest bidder which tends to bring in out-of-towners, Amex centurion card holders, wannabe influencers -- people that don't help create loyalty

There are many other reasons I'm sure as well. Most chefs/GMs/owners I talked to at the time emphasized that they sincerely are not in this for the money, and yes, they like to make a living, but being able to build a community of food lovers who are passionate about their brand is what they really care about. I ended up pivoting to try to build a shift management app soon thereafter...didn't work out but a good entrepreneurship lesson!

I think OP is just doubting the government's ability to know which immigrants are higher quality vs. the companies who seek to employ them.

This thread is a great example of how engineering is often NOT a solution to problems, classic "hammer and nail" territory here. And how engineers often ofterthink things unnecessarily ;)

Why should "standards" be relevant in the measurement of long-term economic indicators? Doesn't the very stack that standards have risen prove the core point that life has gotten better?

That's a fair point. There's arguably an inflection point where media became "mass" media that's hard to pin down but somewhere in the late 1980's-early 1990's where 24 hour news and the internet were in their infancy. I'm sure there's a smart thesis here that a media expert could make ;)
