The grandparent mentioned debt, but the U.S. spends over a trillion every year in defense spending, which doesn't include other funding and tax breaks. Nearly every major technological innovation and thus corporations that use those have been born out of government defense research. Even entire universities, such as MIT, were created for this reason.

Chomsky has argued this, that we dump public funds into entities that end up being completely private. This is even worse than what happens in China. Because the government loses the return in investment and ends up being "purchased" by these corporations and their ilk. It's really a sick system.

Why do people always bring up state support when it comes to China? As if the U.S. doesn't provide massive tax breaks and explicit funding to industry?

It's on every tech post about China, as if it gives them some sort of "unfair" advantage.

The lesson of the last 50 years of the computer and software marketplace is that free and low-end eventually wins.

Is that actually true? There are very large markets that make a lot of money from paid software. And I would honestly prefer actually paying for software rather than constantly dealing with "not a bug" or "PRs are welcome".

What is the counter claim? That he stole many different original genre defining styles and techniques from many different architects over a period of 70 years with not one well corroborated claim?

The fact that no such claims exist is how I made my assertion. Look at his body of work and study it. He reinvented his primary style multiple times but yet kept his core style. A claim that he was a grifter needs a lot of evidence for one of the most colossal intellects of our time. It's like saying Einstein was a grifter.

Elixir, the language, is still basically Erlang with some niceties. The main Ruby influences are the syntax, which I don't love but can't say I hate, macros, which Erlang doesn't have, and large web-frameworks like Phoenix.

Elixir is a wonderful language and one of my favorite languages.

I don't really know. It's just a guess from the looks of it. I also don't know why this is important that Gleam is on Tangled now. Shrug. What really confused me is the commenter's link, both the link itself and its relevance.

Wages is one thing. Our sitting president inacting vast amounts of tariffs and other asinine decisions is another thing and is the reason why no one has even less money these days. Ever since he took office, my available funds have dwindled drastically despite reductions in spending and increases in salary.

I have avoided flying on a 737 MAX and have even asked about it at gates when a plane was switched.

Part of the problem though is that many, many, many routes were straight up removed during and after COVID and still haven't returned. There is often no choice, particularly with certain companies like Southwest. However, I haven't flown Southwest since I learned that they were basically complicit, if not directly involved, in Boeing's 737 MAX issues.

That's a bit of a silly comparison, in my opinion. FLW was an incredibly deep and original thinker. You can't say the same for today's "genius" entrepreneurs. FLW also experimented and created many new ways of designing and building. He couldn't possibly have been stealing that many unique ideas over basically his 70 year career.

His architecture was generally very, very progressive for the time and pushed the bounds of construction and structural engineering.

As someone else mentioned, he was designing houses that look newer than they actually are.

Kaiser has some of the best healthcare outcomes in the country/world due to their protocols and how good they are in ensuring adherence to them.

Where and how is that determined? I.e., any references to back that up?

And you can't in one breath say they have the best healthcare but then say their employees' reports of their experience are unreliable.

Do you have any examples as to how Zig is more simple than Rust?

For the most part, I find Rust to be somewhat boring once you get past the initial learning curve of the borrow checker. It's almost uneventful code and reminds me a lot of writing code in F#.

The only area that Rust feels very friction-y can be with async programming, but basically no language except Erland and Elixir make that frictionless.
