Which generation of chemist/scientist since the 1970s did not describe their work as developing “safer” poisons.

Which chemical company has not sold their product primarily with the “safer” headline?

Do you really believe it? Can you not just see that’s the umbrella justification under which all new generations of poison products are developed?

The safe poison is no poison.

Why are we so intent on killing things on the planet?

“Our new product the Silent Spring Spray 9000 sets safety totally aside to give the farmer total apocalypse over all six legged creatures!!!!” said no chemical company or poisons chemist since DDT.

There’s no surprise here is there?

We, as a society, poison pretty much everything as a standard part of the agricultural process.

The outcome -the goal - of that is of course, death of vast numbers of insects.

Mission accomplished. It’s a success story, strangely.

The only thing that seems weird to me is how society was so easily convinced that soaking all our food in poison is OK and not a problem all good thumbs up. That’s really weird.

It’s not spam for a recruiter to send an email to a developer.

Spam is defined as “unsolicited bulk email”.

It’s a one off, not hulk, so recruiters emailing developer emails found on GitHub isn’t spamming.

Nor is the email address being sold in this case so that aspect of GitHub terms is not being violated.

So in fact you’re wrong and it’s perfectly legitimate for recruiters to use email addresses from GitHub and email them asking about jobs.

Why is this a big deal?

Of course recruiters search public information.

Learn to live with it.

If your outrage threshold is this low then you’re going to spent all your life in a state of outrage.

It’s nit even interesting let alone important.

Information in github, far from being surrounded by an invisible force field of integrity protection, is actually prime hunting territory for recruiters and any recruiter who doesn’t mine it probably needs to explain to their boss why they’re doing such a bad job.

The recruiter in question, far from being apologetic should have said “yes of course I got your email from GitHub so what?”

The guy recommends avoiding this recruiter. I recommend you use this recruiter as they clearly display basic competence at the task of recruiting.

So great strength of conviction except for self interest.

This is exactly why it's a childish opinion that ignores the interconnectedness of our society.

Advertising is baked in to the fabric of how our social systems work in an interconnected way.

People were offended by advertising in the same way in the 1970s.

Advertising offendees will always be offended no matter where advertising sophistication is at.

Computers. And if you want to be pedantic, you'll say but they would exist for military etc!!!!!

But if you're not being pedantic you'll agree that most stuff relating to computing exists in its current form in lockstep with yhe ability of companies to sell and therefore advertise their products.

Not just computers but everything related to them too.

This is a dogmatic viewpoint I think often seen in very technical people who are unwilling to see the interconnectedness of how our society works.

I bet there's any number of things this person values that simply wouldn't exist without advertising.

It's a childish and immature opinion really.

Anyone who hates advertising this much should show their commitment by working at an organization that does not advertise. Loathing advertising and at the same time depending on it for income is deeply hypocritical.

So why haven't all websites cut off these countries?

Why haven't the ISPs cut off these countries?

Github has acted because github is under the control of a giant corporation, Microsoft or otherwise.

So there's a line that runs precisely from Microsoft acquisition to cutting off countries from the world's largest open source repository. It's a direct outcome of the Microsoft acquisition.

I went to a comedy show where the comedian ruthlessly mocked vegans. It was very funny.

There's not many targets of mocking these days that are acceptable maybe vegans are one.

Firefox has lost its lead because it's lost the developers.

Chrome has invested massively in developer tools for chrome and it's shows.... I think chrome is the best software ever written. The developer tools are so powerful that it'd hard to even know the full breadth of what's in there.

Firefox offers nothing to developers over chrome, which is sad.

So what are the alternatives for system programming?

Rust, Golang? Any other true contenders?
