I have found myself wondering a lot lately about the alternative universe where all the effort and resources devoted to developing and using AI coding and debugging agents were instead simply dedicated to fuzzing human-generated code. How would the code quality and total usefulness of the results have compared?

The best carbon capture device is the ocean, and for the last 10 years or so huge amounts of free-floating sargassum seaweed have grown in warm ocean waters around the world. IANAL but I know enough about US law to know that giving accommodation is explicitly barred from being counted as compensation. Workers have to be paid minimum wage regardless of any room or board provided. I would be surprised if the law was much different in the UK.

I don't understand the point of this article.

Was she not working in the US in exchange for accommodation? It certainly seems she was.

Was she not violating US visa rules by doing so? IANAL but it seems plausible she was.

Why did she sign her statement if it was inaccurate? I seem to see a lot of stories of people getting in legal trouble that boil down to 'I signed an inaccurate statement because I thought that would make it all go away.' Is this supposed to be an argument worthy of sympathy?

Is there a reason to see this story as something other than someone was unable to exercise white privilege to avoid consequences for bending (breaking) the rules?

In the USA:

1. The artist owns the copyright.

2. Derived works without permission of the author are illegal, unless under specific exemptions like fair use. The author of a book made into a film continues to own their words, the filmmakers own their original creative contributions to the work. Concepts and themes can't be copyrighted, so unless the Stones quoted Bulgakov's words verbatim, his estate would have no claim.

3. "The ownership of a copyright may be transferred in whole or in part by any means of conveyance or by operation of law, and may be bequeathed by will or pass as personal property by the applicable laws of intestate succession."

4. You'd have to ask the monkey. No.

5. Copyright law only applies to people, so there is no meaning to those concepts.

Then it's the prompt that is copyrighted, not the end result.

US copyright law specifically states that only works fixed into existence by a human author can be copyrighted, and specifically excludes processes or procedures by which a work might ultimately come to be fixed.

A computer cannot be the author but as long as it was a human that told the computer to make the image or wrote the code that allowed the computer to generate the image on its own, then the human is the author.

That is exactly not the case. US law specifically requires that a copyright can only be given to something an author has fixed into a tangible medium of expression. It is the act of fixing itself that makes an item copyrightable.

The law specifically excludes any process or procedure by which a work might ultimately come to be fixed from copyright protection.

I don't have to imagine it, I remember the 1990's.

I think the answer is clear and rather obvious. Require all writing assignments to be written out longhand, and require a high standard of composition, handwriting, spelling and grammar. Pay no attention whatsoever to whether or not the the text is AI-generated.

Even if students do nothing but copy AI output verbatim, the intensive and intimate exposure to adequate writing, and the discipline of producing legible handwriting, would be powerfully educational.

For millennia, students have learned literature and writing skills by copying out long passages from the classics. Teachers now have an opportunity to trick students into doing just that with the bonus of letting the students think they are pulling a fast one.

In the future, teaching students to prompt AIs to produce good writing, and recognize it when they see it, will be functionally indistinguishable from teaching them to be good writers, and would be a vast improvement over the current state of affairs.
