Ha55ii's powder game is perhaps the best of the genre, and the ease of sharing made for a pretty cool online community circa 15 years ago. I remember various calculators / computers created in powder game, along with a bunch of artistic efforts.

Though I agree that inequality is less important than the quality of life of the poorest people, this article explicitly tries to characterize the latter, so even though this is done in the name of discussing wealth inequality, I'm not sure your comment applies here.

I was just starting a comment on this but you beat me to it! I believe

The linked article covers this - the main innovation is neither the HIV activation treatment nor the general mRNA-wrapped-in-lipids (LNP) delivery mechanism. Instead, it's a new form of LNP which works on specific white blood cells that were hard to target before.

  It was “previously thought impossible” to deliver mRNA to the type of white
  blood cell that is home to HIV, said Dr Paula Cevaal, research fellow at the
  Doherty Institute and co-first author of the study, because those cells did
  not take up the fat bubbles, or lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), used to carry it.

  The team have developed a new type of LNP that those cells will accept, known
  as LNP X. She said: “Our hope is that this new nanoparticle design could be a
  new pathway to an HIV cure.”

I built a similar thing that includes forces between particles meant to simulate a sort of fluid or, as you scroll down, a gelatinous solid. There’s a bit of free energy injected to keep things moving so it’s actually a very bad fluid sim, but I think that makes it a better interactive toy in exchange.

One of the fun parts of naively n^2 particle simulations is trying to find ways to reduce the algorithmic complexity of collision detection. I remember messing with sweep lines and similar, though I don’t remember what optimizations made it into the final code. [0]

It was supposed to be a fluid simulation, but it’s slightly broken in ways that I thought made it more fun. I made as a hobby project many moons ago.

These days there are similar looking things you can add to a site with a line or two of includes, but I think mine remains a little more sophisticated.

It’s interactive, and scrolling changes the simulation parameters.

I'm not super familiar with KYB, so it could be that this would pass a human check as well, but I got in with a couple of mostly-blank utility bill / AOI templates and a pastebin saying 'this is the company x website, we do business y' as the official company website.

In any case this is a cool demo, and the type of thing that I expect to be mostly solved as LLMs get better. Good luck!

If you generated this with an LLM, you might consider labeling it more clearly. Wrote copy-and-pasting of llm outputs seems contrary to the ‘thoughtful and substantive’ north star of hacker news comments. And just in case I’m wrong, apologies - it would be a good bit of irony if I turned out to be the one hallucinating.

This Voltaire quote is misleading. He continues: “… one would imagine this piece to be the work of a drunken savage. Hi HN! A few friends and I created WallSmash years ago for our own amusement. We've been occasionally tweaking it ever since, and recently it has picked up a few regular players.

Probably the most interesting parts were working out the collision physics to be frame-rate-independant, making the drawing loop, and playing with the particle effects on collisions. Happy to answer any questions or entertain feature requests here :)

Although I don't know whether lab grown meat will be cost-competitive with traditional meat in the near future, the article's thesis "Lab Grown meat will never be cost competitive with traditional meat" assumes a few key points that seem non-intuitive, and makes me wonder if the article is written in good faith:

The footprint and cost of a slaughterhouse does not include the footprint and cost of the places meat is actually grown. The article notes the lab is 'slightly cheaper' than a slaughterhouse - when you add in the space and facilities needed to raise cows I suspect the cost gap significantly increases.
  > Lab grown meat would have to be produced in Class 8 clean rooms.
My understanding is that clean rooms have much higher standards than other food processing facilities. Cell cultures today are grown to be studied in tiny amounts so small amounts of contamination need to be strenuously avoided. If we're instead concerned with the volume of production, I'd expect any amount of dirtiness below the incredible filth of a slaughterhouse is likely a win.
  > There will be no advancements in cell density of lab-grown meat.
The article assumes lab grow meat will continue to be grown as a single cells in culture. While this is the state of the art today, I'd expect many companies and labs are hard at work on denser strategies. As the article capitulates, cultivated meat could be economically viable "[when] companies can make cells grow beyond certain widely recognized biological limits. Higher cell density means more meat per batch, which in turn means the number of bioreactors can fall, and the size of the clean room can shrink."

All together, I think lab-grown meat is a lot less of a certain-failure than the article seems to suggest.

You could argue that the apis in question are more mature now than when Node was first released.

Either way, if Deno is one day replaced by something else, say 'Done' to keep the naming convention, that won't refute the use everyone will have gotten out of Deno in the mean time, in the same way that Deno doesn't refute the use everyone has already gotten out of Node.

You're mistaken. Bannon said:

It's a pragmatic thing. Telling an imposter syndrome sufferer that they have imposter syndrome is more productive than telling an imposter they're an imposter. On the internet when you can't be sure which person you're talking to, it's better to give advice that could be helpful if it turns out to apply to the person you're talking to, than to share commentary that wouldn't be too helpful either way.

I think the complaint is about attribution. If a friend takes you to the park to watch the cranes and ducks, it would be a stretch to call them a great artist for facilitating that potentially sublime experience, because anyone could have taken you. Similarly Pollock's paintings may be aesthetic, but if they are easily imitated, it's hard to argue the works themselves make their author a great artist.

To be fair to Pollock, he had the creative insight to make his work in a less permissive period of art, so it's fair to argue he was a great innovator or artist on that merit, but it's a different type of achievement vs 'timeless' pieces of art like (imho) Bernini.
