I think this depends on what you consider to be the fundamental trait of double-entry accounting: the error-checking or the explanatory power.

It is true that by enforcing that value movement have both a source and a target, we make it possible to add a useful checksum to the system. But I believe this is a side benefit to the more fundamental trait of requiring all value flow to record both sides, in order to capture the cause for each effect.

I agree with your general perspective though: technology has afforded us new and different tools, and thus we should be open to new data models for accounting. I don't agree with other commenters that we should tread lightly in trying to decipher another field, nor do I agree with the view that the field of Accounting would have found a better way by now if there were one. Accountants are rarely, if ever, experts in CS or software engineering; likewise software developers rarely have depth in accounting.

Source: just my opinions. I've been running an accounting software startup for 5 years.

I agree with your first statement, but a little lost on the last one—I would think of the first idea as a question of data modeling, whereas the last (bad inputs) is one of enforcement and ownership.

Both present challenges, but better inputs don't help without a better model for business objects (as I see it)?

We're building the platform to automate accounting and tackle the underlying data issues which plague accounting and finance departments. Customers like Plaid, Brex, Wealthfront, AngelList, Mercury, and more depend on Numeric to automate their work, to collaborate, and to monitor, analyze, and share insights on their financial data. We've raised $10M to date from excellent investors like Founders Fund, Menlo Ventures, and more.

We're a product-first company with technical founders and an engineering team whose past experiences include Brex, Segment, Carta, and more. This will be a fit if you're excited to understand your users and the domain, as well as to have substantial responsibility and impact. We work in person in our SF & NYC offices, and prioritize speed and ownership (both technical and product ownership). We're growing rapidly, we're well-funded, and building out our team to continue investing in ambitious product goals.

Product-oriented engineers appreciated, bonus points for startup experience and/or full-stack experience with Typescript. >=3 YOE.

Generally people have a recovery option (“Forgot Password”) which routes to the same email, meaning it’s effectively already a single point of failure.

But it’s generally a well-secured one (2fa, ip monitoring ). So in effect we’re not making it more of a single point of failure, we’re just removing the various other means of attack by removing site-specific identities (passwords)

For our team, VS Code is reaching that point. The Macbooks can’t keep up with VS Code’s decay.

Unfortunately Zed lacks good defaults (like a way to change tabs without the mouse) and certain vs code features like snippets. Makes it difficult to transition a team which has been dependent on Vscode and which has absolutely no interest in spending our days configuring tools

Come join us to build the modern accounting & finance platform. Companies like Wealthfront, AngelList, Clearbit, and more depend on Numeric to collaborate & automate their workflows, as well as to monitor, analyze, and share insights on their financial data.

Our mission is to solve the data issues that sit at the root of companies' problems when it comes to finance and accounting. Companies want up-to-date, accurate, useful financial data as easily and often as possible; good data enables good operations and decision-making. Today's systems unfortunately do little to help, and accountants are relegated to fairly manual data entry and error checking. We're tackling these foundational problems and we need great engineers.

Looking for product & customer-focused engineers[1]; this will fit if you like to build quickly, contribute to product direction, and know your users.

Bonus points for startup experience and/or full-stack experience with Typescript. 4+ YOE.

Children are not clay to be molded, and they are not computer systems to be planned and carried out. They are individuals. And there are no clear solutions to mental health, substance abuse, or suicide--but there are clear non-solutions like helicopter parenting.

EDIT: And best-efforts at laying out everything for your kid are more than potentially-wasted energy. It's smothering, controlling behavior of someone who should have the right to live and make their own choices and mistakes.

It's possible you're coming from a very different background than me... I can understand your point of view if your context is being raised under real impoverished conditions; I agree a parent should do anything they can to meet a necessary level of stability for the child.

But this comment makes me think of what is more likely familiar to members of this forum, where parents use their children to serve their own ego, trying to do everything to yield the best "Success" for their child where success is defined by the parent. For so many of us (professionals in the tech industry), the "wellbeing of your child" is not really a question--we know we'll be able to provide food, shelter, etc. People will say they do other things for the "wellbeing" but what they really mean is living out their own failed life goals by putting that baggage on their kid.

So yeah, you got downvoted. It's possible you meant to make a more sympathetic point, but my first impression is that the comment espouses an actively harmful idea about the relation between parent and a child.

I've recently move to using a git repo has my store for notes, and different clients for access and editing.

On Desktop I use Obsidian (although most anything will do) and on mobile I use GitJournal which easily links into an existing git repo.
